Halloween gives us all a chance to dress up and costumes. More important to me it gives a chance to watch and revisit horror, thrillers, gore, suspense, and just plain scary movies.

Classics that I think are great are:

The Wicker Man   sexual pagan rituals in this strange british village. The townfolk surpise you with nudity, language, insinuations, and images.

Suspiria   watched this for first time. Has the ultimate best murder scene. The music in this one still makes me shudder.

Devil's Backbone  very good movies. Dark, mysteriously captivating, and pulls you in with an excellent unique story of a ghost. This is a spanish ghost story and a quest for revenge.

Halloween Michael Meyers at his best. Jamie Lee Curtis emerges as the  scream queen.

Some favorite Modern ones:
High Tension This movie amazed me, considering I had never heard of it. French film that has the feel of small american mid-west redneck (Texas Chainsaw-ish) murders. Great movie, though final ending seems absurd.

Audition a sleeper type movie. Japanese subtitle is the best version (preserves her natural cute girlish voice which is important for the ending. Dont let the slow and happy beginning fool you. You are not watching a Romance movie. This movie will have a surprise at the end. Kiri kiri kiri kiri kiri.

Call me a coward, just can't handle scary movies. Give me a good soppy love story anytime. I much prefer to cry than scream.

I know I'm a bit late replying for this one, but the movie Halloween has always been the worst for me.  That freakin music gives me the willies.  I know it's a movie (and not a real good one), but there is something about it that just gets me.

Useless Knowledge...

Did you know that the producers were set to start filming and were not going to use a mask for Michael.  It just happened to be Halloween at the time, so they sent a grip to the local 5 and dime to find something.  All he could find was a clown mask (it was a small town).  They ripped the hair off, painted it white and WALA, a horror figure is created.

Interesting trivia there Brenda. It was also Jamie Lee Cutis's first big movie. Maybe that's why you find it so disturbing.

Could  be Cassie.  But I'm sure it had nothing to do with sitting 3 feet from the TV when I was about 4 watching the entire thing....right before bedtime.  Great parenting in the 70's huh?

Don't think its changed much today have a look at the age of the kids coming out of M and MA rated movies.

Kendra:  the only movie from your list that I watched and liked was SUSPIRIA it was a great movie; I wonder why they don't put it out at the video stores...I'm sure people would rent it.

Silent Hill.  That movie was so scary.

Silent Hill was good... I loved the effects. One of my scariest movies of all time goes to The Mothman Prophecies... but very little scares me anymore. I loved Hostel and House of Wax, and there are a million other horror movies I love... as one of my favorite genres, how could there not be? But my favorite horror of all time is definitely Poltergeist, followed closely by Final Destination 1 & 2. The third installment was good, but not near the caliber of the first 2.

Speaking of scary stuff...
Before I admitted I was TS, there was very little that could scare me.  I would walk through a haunted house and people whom I wasn't expecting could jump out at me and I wouldn't react.  Now you can make me jump without too much effort.  I don't know if it's the hormonal changes or just changes in my emotions by not locking them away.  Either way, I wouldn't want it to be like it was ever again.

It could be the hormones, Melissa... I remember when I was going through puberty, I was far more easily scared than I was before or than I am now. Also, I know a lot of really feminine chicks who are scared to death of horror movies... could just be coincidence, though.

Good point, Melissa; I guess I could always pretend to be afraid of scary movies and get the sympathy vote from chicks... or maybe I should just remain the brave one and let them fall all over me LOL. Where do I find these chicks?

Rafe, you should be the brave one.  Most women like to cling on to their man if nothing more than an excuse to cuddle.  Men are supposed to be the protectors and that one of the attractive thing about men to women.

Okay, I rented SILENT HILL yesterday.  My gosh! that was one of the scariest movies I have seen in years.  Believe it or not, I have seen that same escenario many times in my nightmares.  Weird!  Thankfully I didn't watch it alone, so that was a good thing!

Both where excellent, I went to bed and locked my bedroom door after both....

Hmmmmm... checking under the bed is a natural instnict for me Tink, 15 years ago while comissioning a plant in Malaysia, I came face to face with a spitting Cobra who was enjoying a nice sleep under my bed in the hotel room.

The room had a sign on the door which read "Warning, please be careful of snakes" and it wasn't until I realized that the maids left the rooms open and hence snakes could get in, that I took this seriously.

Believe me, this was more scary than any horror movie...
