Last night I had a consultation and I now have my first appointment for friday.  I'm not sure if I'm more nervous about it or excited to get it out of the way in preparation for SRS.  :-\

Well, I had my first electrolysis appointment on friday and it hurt A LOT.  However, just knowing I'm getting it cleared makes it a bit addictive.  I am trying to get it cleared in such a way that after srs, my hair down there will be in the exact shape I want it.  This includes getting my bikini line cleared.  After enough area has cleared, we are going to move to my face and pick up taking care of the blonde hairs that laser didn't take care of.  Also, I will probably take care of my eyebrows so I don't need to keep plucking them. :)

Exciting, Melissa!  How many sessions will it take to clear "down there"?

Are you using Emla to numb it up before you start? I couldn't even finish a laser session down there without getting it at least partly  numb first. Yow!!!

Your surgeon requires electro down there?  Brassard and Bowers don't, did you check as it's something to avoid if you can.  Brassard clears the hair during surgery and leaves the hair pattern you want to finish with.

If you check Dr. Marci Bowers' site, she recommends hair removal and provides a diagram (follow the [PREPARATION] link to find the information, diagram, and a link to electrologists and laserists who do 'south pole' work.)

Yes, I saw that recently, too.  Sounds reasonable to me.  The less they have to do on the big day the better, IMHO.

I don't know, maybe a few sessions.

Well, We put some stuff on down there, but I don't think it did anything since it didn't feel numb at all.  Maybe I'll just do it without putting anything on from now on, since I was able to stand it.  :-\

It's optional with my surgeon, however I know people who have gone to this surgeon and still had hair growing on the inside afterwards, so I wanted to be sure it would be hairless inside.

Ouch!

I know Brassard in Montreal doesn't require electro down there. I wrote his office an email last week about it, and this is what I got back:

"ELECTROLYSIS :

Hair removal on external genitals before male to female reassignment surgery is debatable.

Hair bearing skin on the penis shaft base with the one step technique stays outside the neo vagina.  The skin that will become the internal lining of the new female genital is the rest of the penis skin, scrotal skin and a small «  perineal flap  » ( a one square inch of skin that is located one side above the anal margin on the midline) .  If you want a perfect hair free vagina, you need to be sure that no regrowth of hair has occurred on the area for at least one year after you have finished electrolysis with laser.  Even then, this does not guaranty that no hair will ever grow.

The hair roots are either killed or weakened by electrolysis or laser.  Those only weakened will regrow.  During surgery hair roots are killed with the cauthery on the scrotal skin that is used as a graft ( not on the «  perineal flap  » ) .    During surgery, the hair roots that were weakened are less visible because they are much smaller than those found untreated areas and could be missed by the surgeon and regrow later.  For this reason, in our experience, expeditive laser or electrolysis treatments are worse than not having hair removal at all.  In fact, we can get most hair roots during surgery if they were not weakened.  Regrowth after our surgery is possible but very sparse.

If you want no regrowth at all, you will have to face hours of pain having hair removed and a one year nonegrowth period.
At this time, we do not feel that hair removal is indicated."

Of course, always go with what our surgeon recommends!

I know several post-ops around here and none of them got electro/laser down there and haven't had any complications or hair growing inside... but I think it also has to do with the technique Brassard uses. Another friend of mine is getting it done, but she's going to see Meltzer. And of course, FtM is different.

Brassard did my surgery in Dec 2006 and I've had absolutely no problem with hair regrowth in any part of the surgical site.

I'm post op for 3 years next month. I do not have a hairy vagina. I went to Thailand, Dr. Preecha, and he does a one step surgery and does not require, in fact he told me not to bother with the hair in the genital area. I have had physicals by my doctor and she has not braided the inside of my vagina at all to get a look inside. She says it looks like a vagina, inside and out. Times have changed and surgeries are better now than when Christine Jorganson had hers.

Let's see here.  Go to a surgeon that costs $9000 more so I can save $300 on electrolysis?  Sorry, doesn't compute.

Anyways, I had a session 2 weeks ago and the remaining hair was cleared off.  I have another appointment later today and not much has grown back yet (I know it should eventually).  This means that after clearing down below agin, she should have time to start on the blonde hairs on my face. :)

Hmmmm I didn't suggest that you go to Brassard or any other surgeon for that matter, I just mentioned how Brassard deals with genital hair.  Zap away my dear, zap away.

Ah, ok.  Supposedly mine does too, but I know his hair removal results have been inconsistent and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Well, I was cleared a second time down there.  There weren't many hairs after 2 weeks, so it only took about 10 minutes to clear the area.  The rest of the time, she worked on the blonde hairs on my face and pretty much got most of them.  She started with blend, but my girly skin was too sensitive to the sodium hydroxide produced and started blistering up, so she switched to thermolysis and finished it up.  The entire session ended up being about 45 minutes.  After my laser session on Saturday, I think I will call it good enough unless I suddenly get a resurgence of dark hairs that might be dormant later down the road.  I only have like maybe 20 visible dark hairs and a bunch of them were actually taken care of with the electrolysis, so I don't see the point in going to any more laser appointments.  I might make one more just in case, but will probably cancel at the last minute.  It's free, so it doesn't really matter.  It feels really good to have a smooth chin today.I hadn't counted on her being so fast and had shaved my cheeks.  Next time I won't and I bet she would be able to clear all the hair on my face and down below within an hour.
