I can't believe that in the year 2012, we still have to stand up for equal rights for people in civilized democracies like Canada and our neighbour, the United States. But we must when we see abuses . . .

The story of Jenna Talackova, a transitioned woman who has been kicked out of the Miss Universe Canada pageant because she is not a "natural-born woman," has a lot of people shaking their heads in disbelief today. It's making headlines around the world.

So, I think it is worth reminding people here that when a woman like Jenna — and me and others — transition, the goal is for us to fully integrate into society as women. There are no asterisks beside the gender designation on our birth certificates: mine says Female. It doesn't say "transgender," it doesn't say "transsexual." It says Female. Period!

We are women, and we deserve the same rights all other women in our country have. No more, no less.
