Supporters of a proposed ordinance to extend anti-discrimination legal protections to gay and transgender people in Anchorage are asking an opposition group to pull a campaign ad that says day care centers would be forced to hire transvestites or face jail time. They say the ad is offensive and misleading.

The One Anchorage Campaign, which supports Proposition 5, held a press conference Tuesday to ask the Protect Your Rights -- Vote No On Prop. 5 campaign to remove the ad titled "Daycare" from TV and radio, where it has been airing this week.

In the ad, a cartoon "transvestite" who wants to work at a day care is drawn as a man with a jutting jaw and body hair, wearing a short pink dress, red high heels and lipstick.

Alaska's Prop 5 'Transvestite' Ad Angers LGBT Advocates, Former Governor (VIDEO)

Alaska-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocates say they are angered by the release of a new animated TV ad asking viewers to reject controversial anti-discrimination legislation.

Produced by opponents of Proposition 5, which would extend anti-discrimination protections to LGBT people, the "Daycare" clip shows a cartoon "transvestite" applying for a gig at a daycare center. "If [the daycare center's owner] hires him, she risks losing customers," the narrator announces. "And if she refuses, she can be fined or imprisoned."

The ad then concludes, "Anchorage is already a tolerant city. Vote no on Proposition 5."

Alaska's Anti-Trans 'Tolerant City' Ad

If this doesn't make you throw up in your mouth, you watched it with the sound off.

With Anchorage facing a vote soon on whether to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the city's non-discrimination ordinance, the religious right fanatics have stooped to a new low. Claiming "Anchorage is already a tolerant city," this anti-trans advertisement has been released by the deceptively named "Protect Your Rights."

Ads loom over Anchorage vote Tuesday

By Lisa Keen on March 29, 2012

http://www.keennewsservice.com/2012/03/29/ads-loom-over-anchorage-vote-tuesday/

A political ad on the airwaves in Anchorage, Alaska, claims that a day care center would be forced to hire a "transvestite who wants to work with toddlers" if the city approves an amendment to its human rights law to prohibit discrimination based on "sexual orientation" and "transgender identity."

Another ad claims that a local fitness gym would have to "open the women's locker room to anyone who claims a female identity." It depicts that person as a hairy balding man with a ponytail taking off his swimsuit in the locker room while nearby women scream and cover themselves in apparent shock.

Both ads, done in the form of cartoons, depict the beneficiaries of the proposed new law as burly men hiding behind women's clothing. They are a new twist on old themes for opponents of civil rights protections for transgender people. But they are the weapons unleashed on Anchorage television to defeat Proposition 5, a ballot measure up for vote on Tuesday, April 3.
