A Winchester student faces expulsion from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst for an alleged homophobic ambush that left a member of the college's swim team with a concussion and fractured eye socket.

Tony Brennan, 24, who coaches the UMass women's hockey club, faces hate crime and assault charges, according to campus police.

Brennan is accused of jumping out of a car and going into an anti-gay tirade and then beating a 20-year-old man, police said.

Brennan's mother and lawyer deny the charges, with Sheryl Brennan adding her son is "very close" with homosexual family members.
