A man who was born with a female body was attacked by three men at a nightclub in Reykjavík last weekend. The victim's friend, who is also transgender, said prejudice is rife in Icelandic society and that people in their position are frightened.

The reason for last weekend's assault is said to be that the three men did not approve of the victim's use of the men's restroom, visir.is reports.

His friend, Hafþór Loki Theodórsson, described the events on his website, saying he was lucky to escape with minor injuries.

"The beat him until he managed to escape. He entered a taxi and explained what had happened and was then told by the bloody driver that it is insane to be a 'trannie'," Hafþór wrote.

Although it's a fact and will always be with us but it's too bad that anyone would allow their own thoughts and personal revulsion to be manifest in an act of violence to another human being who is not threatening them physically themselves. I'm a strong believer in self defense, but to just assault someone else simply because they may be perceived as different is animalistic and predatory, something one might expect from a lower life form.

Discrimination will always exist, it's not a bad word in and of itself. I discriminate in what I wear, what I eat, where I go, who I hang out with and even who I like and dislike. It's my freedom of choice to like or dislike certain things or even people. But that right doesn't extend to give license to act out on my feelings if it is in any way hurtful to others. Unfortunately those kinds of Neanderthals are still with us and have hurt us all grievously, and it continues on.
