Ask Matt: When a 'Mother Figure' Transitions

A reader writes: "I have been transitioning for six months, and am one month on hormones, so I have not had many physical changes yet. I am out to my husband, and he has been wonderful and supportive. I am out to my professors at my college, and to most of my friends.

"I am not, however, out to my family. I was raised in a very tense home where my mother was abusing drugs and my father was very emotionally abusive. That being said, it has been years since I left home and my father and I get along fairly well. My mother has not been active in the family since I was twelve. I am the oldest child, and also my father's only biological daughter out of six children. Because of my family situation, I took on the role of taking care of my brothers while my father worked. They all consider me 'Mom' and they still refer to me as such.
