So...I just need to get my frustration out.
First things first; I have two jobs. One as a cashier, and one as a barista. I've worked as a cashier at a certain retail store for over two years, and I just got hired as a barista, I have only worked one official shift there.
And currently, I'm really debating leaving the cashiering job.
So, I haven't really minded being a cashier. But I've been there for two years, I don't even get $8.00 an hour, and the hours are so painfully sporadic (One week I'll get 20 hours, and the next week, I'll get 3) I can't live on that, I don't think anyone can. Not to mention that my District Manager is a brute, and my Store Manager (Who used to be really nice) Has suddenly been treating me like crap for the past five or six months now. I don't know what I ever did to her, but she won't even look at me unless it's to tell me that I'm doing something 'wrong,' I've always done everything that she's ever asked of me, I've repeatedly saved her ass by covering shifts and taking on extra hours whenever someone can't make it in. The only time I ever say 'no' is when I'm in school, if I'm out of town, or if I'm sick, which hardly happens. And I have been passed over for countless promotions no matter how much I express my interest, she never even gives me a reason of 'I don't think you're ready,' she literally stares at me, shuts her mouth, and leaves the room.
At this new job, as a barista, I make less, under $7.00 an hour, but I'm also making tips (Which vary from day to day, of course) For this first week, I only have 17 hours, but that's about how much I get at the other place sometimes too. I've only worked one shift, it's chaotic and crazy, but it's challenging and fun. I'm nervous around my co-workers, but they all seem very nice, and easy to get along with so far. Having to be in by 5:00am sucks, but I'll get used to it. And there are advancement opportunities because it's a local business, and they don't hire supervisors or managers from the outside, so there are more chances for promotion, because they do it within the company itself. If you want to be a manager, you have to be a barista first. Add that, and then the fact that all of the people there call me male, even though the managers have seen my legal ID (With Female on it) and my food-handler's permit that also states my gender. None of them have ever called me a girl, and they use my chosen name.
In short, I'm really considering leaving the cashier job, especially because that boss more or less threatened to fire me today. I was scheduled as a barista from 2:00pm to 7:30pm, and I was given this schedule on last Thursday - I received my cashier schedule on Wednesday, but due to car problems, wasn't able to access it until Saturday (I don't have a computer at home, and I couldn't drive to work) So I spent all night yesterday and all day today trying to find a cover for my shift. I called every person who was trained on register; and none of them were willing to cover me, even though I have repeatedly covered all of them (Yeah, thanks guys) and of course, my manager calls me, all pissed. She said that if we couldn't find a cover that I HAD to come in, that I didn't have a choice and that I'd have to tell my other job that the first one was more important. Basically, that pissed me off, but I remained civil. We found one more person that I had forgotten to call, and thank god, she said she'd take my shift. Calling my boss back and telling her, she was all giddy and giggly like nothing was wrong. Bitch.
So yes, caught in this position, what would you guys do?
Yes, I'd like the money from two jobs, but I really don't know how much longer I can stand the cashier job, I'm sick of getting treated like crap for hardly better than minimum wage.
