BREAKING: Obama endorses SNDA, SSIA anti-bullying bills

By Chris Johnson on April 20, 2012

President Obama has thrown the full weigh of administration behind a pair of bills that would help protect LGBT students against bullying: the Student Non-Discrimination and the Safe Schools Improvement Act.

Shin Inouye, a White House spokesperson, confirmed for the Washington Blade on Friday that Obama supports both pieces legislation — bringing him into alignment with a position that many LGBT organizations had sought for some time.

"The president and his administration have taken many steps to address the issue of bullying," Inouye said. "He is proud to support the Student Non-Discrimination Act, introduced by Senator Franken and Congressman Polis, and the Safe Schools Improvement Act, introduced by Senator Casey and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez. These bills will help ensure that all students are safe and healthy and can learn in environments free from discrimination, bullying and harassment."

The White House today announced that President Obama is endorsing the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA) and Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), two bills pending in Congress to address bullying and discrimination faced by students across the nation.

White House spokesman Shin Inouye tells Metro Weekly, "The President and his Administration have taken many steps to address the issue of bullying. He is proud to support the Student Non-Discrimination Act, introduced by Senator Franken and Congressman Polis, and the Safe Schools Improvement Act, introduced by Senator Casey and Congresswoman Linda Sanchez.  These bills will help ensure that all students are safe and healthy and can learn in environments free from discrimination, bullying and harassment."

What I mean is we, as a society, have a tendency to progress towards what is right and ethical. Slavery ending, women voting, women's rights, African American civil rights all progressed despite what was seen as insurmountable odds.

Currently, we are seeing this trend with same sex marriages. Slowly, but surely, states are coming forth and legalizing same sex marriages.

That's what I meant by "it'll come."

The Student Non-Discrimination Act was first introduced in the 111th Congress in 2009.

I guess the 0bama administration did not throw its "full weight" behind the legislation when it could have passed with no Republican support.

The 0bama administration could have supported the issue then, but failed to do so.

Why the support now? Change of heart??

NO.  We're being played, folks.  It is pure political posturing.

0bama is a poser.

He isn't all i had hoped but he is a hell of a lot better than the other side..

yes we had the people to vote on it before 2010 elections but they were busy with other things like health care etc..

we all need to make sure we vote at every election and primary. I voted today and there was another choice for casey and i voted for them but if it comes down to casey or a republican well casey will get my vote..

PS: I was a delegate for obama in Pa but didn't get selected to go denver...

For those who want to help makes changes please join www.the99declaration.org which will be holding an online election for delegates to go to a convention to approve a redress of grievences to then serve congress etal

well the republicans will just reduce regulations and rape the last remaining natural resorces we have.. They want to drill and frack and mine etc etc etc all for the royal $ with no regard for the people..

what i am upset about obama is not condemning the republicans more and telling the voters they are needed during the mid term elections to keep enough democrats in office to be able to win laws... obama was too nice to the republicans and hasn't condemned them like they deserve..

Not to mention how much Republicans want us to just disappear or find anyway possible to suppress our basic civic rights. Hell....u think Obama is bad? Vote republican and watch your rights go away.

Vote Republican, dig your own grave.

Republicans were instrumental in ending slavery.
Republicans were instrumental in womens suffrage.
Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act.

If we in the GLBT community want an expansion of rights, they need to reach a detente with the moderates and conservatives that make of nearly 80% of the electorate.

Hitching our wagon to 0bama and the extreme socialist left has accomplished next to nothing.

The 2010 elections were as thorough a repudiation of any ruling party as we have seen since 1930. It wasn't a case of 0bama not doing enough.  It was a case of the people realizing what a mistake they made in 2008.

Who cares why as long as it gets passed.

I'd be more worried about laws making having a miscarriage a case of murder.  It has just been legislated in Florida, after similar laws have been passed in other states.

It's sad, but I am beginning to feel that the USA is becoming morally equivalent to the countries it lectures on human rights.

I lose most of my wealth to the government each year.

Liberal Democrats were demoralized in 2010, that's true, because they saw the hopeful middle in 2008 reject the excesses of the 110th and 111th Congresses and the 0bama (mis)administration.

2012 is going to be a referendum on 0bama's job performance.  If things don't get better, much better, it'd going to be a veritable slaughter house for the left.

We are going to see a repeat of 1980 - Are you better off now than you were fours years ago?

The vast majority of voters will answer, "No!"
