What do you call it where you live and where you come from?

Growing up, in the state I lived in, it was generally called *pop*, then in Cali for the other half of my life it is *soda*, spent some time back in OR and it is *pop* there and it seems that's what I call it still even tho I am in Cali and people look at me like I am nuts when they hear me say *pop* lol...how about you?

growing up in Ohio it was pop.

I've also heard "coke" used as a generic term for pop or soda. I can't remember where I was that they used "coke" as generic.

Coke is used as a generic term in much of the south and especially in Georgia.   As in:

"You want a Coke?"

"Sure."

"What kind?"

"Dr. Pepper."

"Soda" here (near Philadelphia, PA), but it's "pop" up near Altoona, PA where my parents live

They also tend to "supp" around noon, and "warsh up" for meals, lol...

Although I've learned it both ways, I tend to use pop.

As a bartender, I learned what some of the proper terms are:
Soda generally means soda water (carbonated water).
Cola is generic for Coke/Pepsi, etc.
When somebody asks for coke you ask if it is specifically coke, or if they were using it generically

Oh well, that's all part of our "pop" culture.

I remember visiting in LA a while back and asking for a "pop" and they didn't know what I was talking about, so I started searching through terminology until they accepted the word "soda".

LOL, it can be a different world in some places...

The first time my wife and  I visited my parents, we were parking along the main street in town when this guy comes walking along with a rifle in his hands... my wife started taking cover behind the car, lol. We had to explain, "No, no, it's just hunting season. He's just going to get bullets, lol..." It's just normal there.

In NYC, growing up, it was soda.  If anyone used the word pop they'd be branded as hicks immediately.

It took me awhile to get used to calling it pop, which is what they use in SW New York State.  When I accidentally say soda, I quickly add the word pop to make sure they know what I'm talking about and realize I'm not some sort of foreigner.

Here its usualy called a coke.... I dont understand why but thats the way it is and Im not going to argue...  Can I have a sprite please 

Just to be different maybe, but here we call it "soft drink".

when someone asks for a coke, they get coca cola unless they ask for something else without calling it a coke

its not a coke, its not pop, or soda pop......ITS FREKIN SODA

Here in the UK POP is the genral term, but in polite conversation you may ask if people want a soft drink.

Pop is allways fizzy and a softdrink incorperates squash or juice, cordial or what ever else you wish to call it.

I grew up close to Philly and we also called everything soda. Although when I was older I got into the habit (no idea where it came from) of calling it a cola. That usually leads people into saying things like, "We only have Pepsi, is that okay?" especially in the southern parts of the US.

I was born in NYC and grew up in NJ...it's always been soda to me.
