Council pursues equal rights law

The push here is meant to make the community "as inclusive as we possibly can," said W. Terrell Jones, chairman of the advisory council.

"We don't see it as special rights for certain groups," said Jones, who is a Penn State administrator. Rather, he said, the advisory council is seeking equal rights.

Specifically, its pitch to the Borough Council seeks a ban on workplace discrimination that's based on sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status or family status.

The measure also would ban discrimination of those types in areas of public accommodation, such as hotels and restaurants.
