I know for ID's you can be male or female, is there another option? or do you have to pick male or female?

I don't think you must choose between male or female. There are certainly people here who have made other choices. Personally I know one or two people who live in the world as something other than one of two genders. I am newly exploring my own gender and got the suggestion that looking here might help me. Personally I appreciate what morty has said in the small amount I have read. For me, this section hasn't been very helpful. I can see that I would not choose the complicated education and just vocabulary and endless discussions of what this or that term means etc. I guess it has been helpful actually. It hasn't helped resolve my gender issues but it has shown me if my explorations show in the end that I have both male and female deeply engrained in me that I would decide which was stronger and either stay as I am or initiate transition and then just express myself as I felt day by day and not worry about being a feminine guy or a masculine girl, not be concerned with other labels. I'm clear for myself I don't need an inbetween/non binary label. If that is what is best for you/who you are and can't/don't want to be in the gender binary, you don't have to. There are as many ways to identify as you can imagine. And even Androgyne its just one other option.i know of gender queer, gender fluid, gender variant, choosing to avoid gendered language and stereotypes as much as possible by using non gendered pronouns such as hir ( pronounced here),ze or they.i feel sure there are many other options and to me, if nothing you find out about suits you, say what does, ask people to refer to and treat you however is true for you. I wish you all the best in your journey.I'm heading back to another area that seems more true to me. Thats the best we can do.

Unless you're getting a US ID card, in which case you totally do. Also in the profile settings here.

Technically speaking, you can decline to choose a gender on your profile. The selection box will be empty and it will show no symbol below your name on your postings.

That's where mine is set now. I know I'm male (mostly) but I just can't seem to bring myself to push that "male" button.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?

options for ID depends on where you live and the type of ID you are wanting some places allow for M,F or X on passports.  It may be possible to get 3rd gender options in different places for other types of ID
