Folks,

I researched what it would take to change my name and gender marker on my Florida Birth Certificate. I asked three authoritative sources and got three completely different answers. One of the answers included two trips to Florida for court appearances. So I asked my attorney to look into it.

Without any trips to Florida and only two trips to the attorney's office to sign and notarize the paperwork, I got my new Birth Certificate in the mail Friday.

David Jerome is my attorney. He and his Paralegal, Beth Schumacher, did a great job and saved me a lot of money. You can contact them at:

I recently changed my name on a Florida birth certificate as a result of a legal name change (done in Florida as well). About a month after my legal name change was granted, the Office of Vital Statistics sent me a letter saying, "Hey, give us $20 because we updated your birth certificate". Can't change the gender yet, though. It was a bit disappointing that at the bottom they print that the birth certificate was amended because the name was changed from X to Y on so-and-so date...but I do like the idea that you can retcon your birth certificate, so that's better than nothing.

My new Female Birth Certificate has an issue date of May 22, 2012. But there is no indication of why it was changed, just that it was issued in 2012 for a birth many years ago.
