I am currently enrolled in a secondary school in southern Ontario. I am completely out at school, and haven't faced too much trouble from the staff. Of course they use the wrong pronouns frequently, but I waited until my last year so I just correct them whenever it comes up. The staff tries really hard to accommodate me.

With that in mind, when I first came out they changed my gender from Female to Male on all the paper work. When they saw my new birth certificate for my legal name change, they admitted that they only changed my gender because they assumed my birth certificate would read Male. Since I am the first transsexual to come out in my school board, they were confused about what they could do around my gender marker, and I'm not exactly sure what they can do either.
Does anybody know if they can legally change gender on paperwork?

i don't think they can change it until you get it changed in all your documents first.

The state of changing your gender marker on the birth certificate is currently in flux. In about 4 months, Ontario will have to come up with a new way to regulate it, because the current requirement of "transsexual surgery" was deemed a human rights violation by a court. However, that doesn't help you at the moment.

Passports can currently be changed so that their gender marker doesn't match your birth certificate. You'd need to go to a Service Canada office and ask them for a form to change the gender marker on your passport. They may or may not know what that is, if they don't you'll need to ask for their manager / ask them to look it up. If you are a minor, your parents will probably need to sign the form. You'll also need to go through the whole regular passport application process as well, of course.

This will let you get a 2 year passport (though sometimes they hand out regular 5 year ones, I don't know why) in your correct gender. If you then take your passport to the school folks, they'll probably be willing to match your passport rather than your birth certificate, given they seem supportive. After all, if your passport doesn't need to match the birth certificate, why should their paperwork?

In addition, if you are old enough to get a learner's permit / driver's license, you can get the correct gender marker on that with a letter from a physician saying you are under their care for transitioning. And if you have that and your passport you can get the gender marker on your health card changed as well.

The more IDs in your correct gender the better usually.

Thanks for the replies.  :)

I was under the impression that I couldn't get my passport changed until I got surgery.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow, so I will have to ask her about what she can do for me. (letter wise)
I am old enough to get my learner's permit and I plan to get it in the summer. What exactly do I need to bring to get my permit?

Here are the requirements to change the gender marker for a driver's license: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/genderchange.shtml

Alternatively, if you already have your passport changed by then, they'll just use the gender marker from that.

I got everything changed pre-surgery, except my Birth Certificate of course. Just makes things easier.

And no problem, I hope that helps!

What about your OHIP?

I just had mine changed while I was getting my name changed for my DL and OHIP. Since I already had my DL gender changed to F, the clerk automatically updated my OHIP without my even asking. OHIP lists a birth certificate as a required ID document for such a change, but she didn't ask to see mine.

Has anyone else had their OHIP changed prior to surgery?
