Scanners will display prosthetics and identify transgender travellers

CONTROVERSIAL full body scanners due to be introduced in airports next month will identify prosthesis wearers, including breast cancer survivors and transgender passengers.

Earlier this year the federal government announced that the new scanners to be installed in eight international terminals would be set to show only a generic stick figure image to protect passengers' privacy.

But documents released under freedom of information show that in meetings with stakeholders, Office of Transport Security representatives confirmed the machines would detect passengers wearing a prosthesis.

We've had the "Shoe Bomber."

We've had the "Underwear Bomber."

What's next?  The "Knocker Bomber"?

and to avoid leaving anyone out, don't forget the "Packer Bomber."

Your breast forms will need to be removed and examined for explosive substances. Please place these in the basket to the left. And enjoy your flight.

This could be right out of Austin Powers.

I think the whole thing is pretty disgusting. I would rather have my freedom than their "security".

agreed. the pilot needs to be given self defense tactics, plus the passengers need to be given better emergency escape plans. the security is ->-bleeped-<-.

To be honest, I don't care much as long as I'm allowed on the plane.
What? You go through a scanner, talk to the officer there a bit and get out.
You'll never see anyone you saw at the airport again.

I've taken the plane well over 30 times.
No biggie for me. I've seen it all.

Is it wrong? Hell yes it is.
But I'm not going to freak out about it.

If they wanna see my packer, I'll just slap it on their table.
Reactions should be priceless.

Than again, I don't really wear my packer.

I've been traveling on the ground since 9-11 anyway because I cannot afford an air ticket plus an 18" telescope does not apply as carry on.

Welcome to the new America, where you have no rights.

I'm not sure I understand the connection.

I believe the post need sarcasm tags.  Yes?

I live here and I see rights being taken away.

Too long to explain what was meant, so I removed the post.

Hmm, It is very iffy I think... Technically flight is a service, so I don't think by definition anything that isn't against the law would be a loss of a right.

However we all have personal rights to privacy that simply aren't protected, but in some cases the majority is fine with it not being protected becasue it doesn't harm them for x, y, or z reason. So is it right to go through as many hoops to protect everyone, or leave some out in the cold? It's really an unanswerable question becasue neither is a perfect solution.

Who knows.

There exists no "right" to fly on a commercial airliner.

By doing so, you accept the red tape that comes with it.

Well, what the hell..let's just trash our rights all together? It's all just silly crap anyway. ::)

It is "silly crap" until some guy takes of his shoes off and tries to blow up the plane.

There is a website, PlaneCrashInfo.com that keeps a datebase of commericial aircraft disasters.  Some of the terrorist actions will make your hair stand on end.

Terrorists, especially the Islamofascists, just don't think about things the same way we in the West do.  They see terrorism through a prism of religious hate and envy, and do not bat an eye to become suicide murders.  It is much like the kamakazi mentality in WWII.

Well, I think that it is stupid to give up some of your rights over something that "could" happen. I guess I need to "agree to disagree" on this subject.

By the way, my "silly crap" comment was referring to the erosion of civil liberties. It wasn't referring to terrorist attacks.

Okay, I misunderstood.

I am a civil libertarian.  I agree with you in principle.  I recall Benjamin Franklin's quotation,

Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

These airline regulations must balance the role of the government as the protector of the People, with the People's liberties.  I don't see being questioned or scanned before a flight as giving up an essential liberty.  It is a nuisance, but not an invasion of my privacy.

Being outed by being required to walk through a full body scanner that illustrates all the intimate details is an invasion of my privacy.
