BANGALORE: At least 200 hijras (transgender) from different parts of the state thronged to NGO Hall near Cubbon Park on Saturday to watch their own story - 'Let the Butterflies Fly', a documentary which narrates the story of hijra, who faced severe police torture and abuse.

Organized by Sangama, an organization for sex workers, the 95-minute documentary showcased the challenges faced by the hijra community and how a transgender was beaten up by a section of people. The movie made viewers realize that minorities and caste system are created by the society, but nature has made hijras, which is inevitable.

Sangama spokesperson Akkai Padmashali said, "To create awareness about gender discrimination and problems faced by hijras, the documentary will be telecast in 30 districts of Karnataka. The Karnataka Judicial Academy has asked for a few copies to showcase it to the judges. Noted filmmaker Gopalan Menon took three years to produce the documentary which won Best Film Award during Kashish Mumbai International Film Festival recently.
