ORLANDO, Fla. —

A housekeeper was arrested Thursday on charges of molesting a teenager inside of an International Drive hotel.

Orlando police said the attack happened at a Days Inn on July 4 after the boy's mother went down to the front desk of the hotel on International Drive.

Police arrested 35-year-old Vanessa Olmos, but they said Olmos is actually a man who identifies himself and lives as a female, working as a housekeeper.

News Staff Comment-

The individual in question, Vanessa Olmos, is termed a "Transvestite", and described as " a man who identifies himself and lives as a female".

According to the GLAAD Media Reference Guide, 8th Edition, Updated May 2010 ( http://www.glaad.org/reference/style ) ;

Transvestite - Derogatory see Cross-Dressing

Cross-Dressing -To occasionally wear clothes traditionally associated with people of the other sex. Cross-dressers are usually comfortable with the sex they were assigned at birth and do not wish to change it. "Cross-dresser" should NOT be used to describe someone who has transitioned to live full-time as the other sex or who intends to do so in the future. Cross-dressing is a form of gender expression and is not necessarily tied to erotic activity. Cross-dressing is not indicative of sexual orientation.

Transgender- An umbrella term (adj.) for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. The term may include but is not limited to: transsexuals, cross-dressers and other gender-variant people. Transgender people may identify as female-to-male (FTM) or male-to-female (MTF). Use the descriptive term (transgender, transsexual, cross-dresser, FTM or MTF) preferred by the individual. Transgender people may or may not decide to alter their bodies hormonally and/or surgically.

Transsexual (also Transexual)- An older term which originated in the medical and psychological communities.
While some transsexual people still prefer to use the term to describe themselves,
many transgender people prefer the term transgender to transsexual. Unlike transgender, transsexual is not an umbrella term, as many transgender people do not identify as transsexual. It is best to ask which term an individual
prefers.

ASSOCIATED PRESS (2008)

transgender - Use the pronoun preferred by the individuals who have acquired the physical characteristics of the opposite sex or present themselves in a way that does not correspond with their sex at birth.
If that preference is not expressed, use the pronoun consistent with the way the individuals live publicly. See transsexual.

transsexual - A person who changes gender by undergoing surgical procedures. See transgender.

NEW YORK TIMES (2005)

transgender (adj.)-  is an overall term for people whose current identity differs from their sex at birth, whether or not they have changed their biological characteristics. Cite a person's transgender status only when it is pertinent and its pertinence is clear to the reader. Unless a former name is newsworthy or pertinent, use the name and pronouns (he, his, she, her, hers) preferred by the transgender person. If no preference is known, use the pronouns consistent with the way the subject lives publicly.

Here again is an example of Media misrepresentation, whether intentional or unintentional of a Transgendered individual.

Tbh this story is kind of suspicious, but maybe I'm just being biased. I'm just not inclined to completely trust his story.

Media Fails in Coverage of Trans Hotel Employee in Florida

Monday, July 9, 2012 - 2:27pm by Dani Heffernan, Advertising and Campaigns Fellow at GLAAD

http://www.glaad.org/blog/media-fails-coverage-trans-hotel-employee-florida

Last week, a transgender woman employed at a Days Inn motel in Orlando, Florida was arrested following accusations that she had inappropriately touched a 14-year-old boy who was guest at the motel. A police report alleges that Vanessa Olmos entered the boy's room where the incident is said to have occurred. Vanessa faces charges of molestation of a victim younger than 16 and battery, but says she never entered the room or touched the boy.

While this story deals with a sensitive issue of an alleged crime, the media has largely disregarded basic respect for Vanessa and her identity. Several news outlets have used wrong pronouns and called Vanessa the wrong name, misrepresented her gender identity, and even referred to her with derogatory slurs (screenshot from NY Daily News website below via Autostraddle).

There's something suss about this story. Weirdly, I actually stayed in this hotel in 2000. I got followed round the car park by a black guy shouting "you're no girl"

Fortunately we were just leaving after checking out
