I said I'd come up with a cat name today

I just adopted a beautiful and sweet-natured shelter kitty. I had been telling my daughter for years that we would get a cat someday, when we could afford one. We just moved into an apartment that allows cats, and my roommate (who has no children) casually mentioned that he was getting a cat. He then changed his mind and my kid was crestfallen. So I got one, even though we're financially in a spot that requires some re-prioritizing for us to be able to afford it.

He's 9 years old, long-haired, shy with strangers, very much a lap cat, somewhat talkative, has large paws, doesn't like to be away from me even when I just go shower, isn't ever at all playful, idk what else.

Any name ideas? His shelter name was Thon Thaddeo, but they said they didn't know much about his history or what his name was before he came to the shelter. He came to the Oregon Humane Society through another shelter. He has no health problems and is very affectionate but for some reason was unwanted for a long time.

I want him to have some kind of title or honorific, but that can be added to whatever. Right now I'm leaning towards Tobias because of a cute psychologist I once had a crush on. My kid suggested Motor because he purrs so loudly, and my roommate suggested Operator or Dialer because he has an attachment to and almost always sleeps on the phone book.

More ideas are welcome. Everybody went to bed, so my saying I'd come up with a name today is no longer all that relevant. :)

I would go with "Motor", as your daughter seems to like it.

He looks like he is part Maine Coon.  He is a big boy.  Pretty colors.

Tis cause he's old. The older the pet, the less people who want to adopt him.

I like Motor too it's cute lolz.

I  <3/love you're new kitty. He is, a very very handsome boy. Thank you, for, sharing photo's of him, with all of us  ;D. I would say, any name, your daughter likes is good.

How are you enjoying him? How is he doing with your daughter?

He's so wonderful. I feel bad because he tends to hide when my daughter comes into the room. She's so intense. He's very attached to me and she sees that, and wants to hold him too, but he just doesn't like other people right now. He sleeps at my feet, is immediately in my lap if I come back after leaving the room (lol even for just a few minutes), and is very vocal with me. So yeah. He's lovely and we all love him, but he's taking his time warming up to everyone.

No name yet. I read off my KoL familiar names and my kid likes Zither and my roommate likes Smithsonian. I like Possum but this fellow is definitely not a Possum.

I'm sure you'll come up with a name for your handsome Sir Motor Head Lover Boy Kitty, but sometimes you just have to relax and let it come to you

He looks rather happy happy and content to be there  :)

He is so happy. Everybody in my apartment worships cats whether they admit it or not (I'm officially an anti-mammal curmudgeon myself) and he gets anything he looks like he might want.

Sir Motor Head Lover Boy Kitty sounds pretty sweet, honestly.

I can give you some "pointers", on, how to "improve" relations, between, a small child and a domestic cat. I just need to know, how old your daughter is and how she tries to interact, with your new cat.

Quote from: Felix on July 09, 2012, 05:03:23 AMHe's very attached to me and she sees that, and wants to hold him too,....

That is a very good sign. It might be, you're the most calm, least physically overpowering, from the cats point of view, and cats just pick the people, they love sometimes  ::).

Quote from: Felix on July 09, 2012, 05:03:23 AM....but he just doesn't like other people right now.

Are you the one who, primarily feeds, waters, plays with and in general, interacts with the cat?

That is how, my DLH (Domestic Long Hair) is with me. As I type this, on my laptop, she is laying at my feet.

He seems to be, your kitty cat huh  :D.

I agonized for a few weeks over naming my current nitty. Almost called him Horatio...it seemed to suit him, mostly. Then his right name just spilled out of me one day.

You have a handsome boy here, and he deserves the right name. Let it come to you.

I ended up naming him Professor Cuddlesworth. I was half-joking when it was my answer to a person who asked on the phone what his name was, but it made me giggle and it suits him. He's really sweet but also pretty meticulous and deliberate. I tried to call him Thon for short (as it was his original first name) but nobody likes that so we usually shorten it to "the Professor" or "Cuddlesworth."

She's 12 but acts much younger. She has the sudden movements and overexuberance of a toddler, honestly. A few days ago he jumped in her lap, and her reaction was "LOOK DADDY HE'S IN MY LAP HE LIKES ME!" and lol he immediately ran away and hasn't tried that since.

And I am the one who primarily interacts with him. He's been through a lot, and when everyone else was trying to pet him and get to know him, I kept quiet because he was so clearly shell-shocked and fragile and still getting his bearings. So he's chill with me and we get to be cranky and suspicious together.

I LOVE, the name. How did you come up with, said name?

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMI was half-joking when it was my answer to a person who asked on the phone what his name was, but it made me giggle and it suits him.

Dare I ask, what, did the person, on the phone, think, of the name :)?

Sounds like, a nice, "normal", domestic cat. Note, the quotes, around, the word normal. I have never met, a normal domestic cat, I guess, that is why, I love them, so very much  ;D!

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMI tried to call him Thon for short (as it was his original first name) but nobody likes that so we usually shorten it to "the Professor" or "Cuddlesworth."

I LOVE, the name and nicknames, you picked. To me, he does not look like a Thon. But, what do I know really.

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMShe's 12 but acts much younger. She has the sudden movements and overexuberance of a toddler,

Is it possible, for her to be quite and calm, around the cat, for short periods? If so, I have some suggestions, that, would be "age appropriate".

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMhonestly. A few days ago he jumped in her lap, and her reaction was "LOOK DADDY HE'S IN MY LAP HE LIKES ME!" and lol he immediately ran away and hasn't tried that since.

I am sorry, that, the cat did that. Did that upset your daughter?

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMAnd I am the one who primarily interacts with him.

Is it possible, for your daughter, to be the one who feeds him? Or, is it possible, for your daughter, to play with the cat, with, a "fishing pole" toy? If so, that could, help them bond.

Quote from: Felix on July 17, 2012, 04:35:15 AMHe's been through a lot,

What do you know, about, the cats past? Not that, all, or any information, that shelters are given, upon, the time of surrender, is correct.

Well, you clearly, know how to "bond" with a domestic cat  :eusa_clap:!
