New U.S. Navy Carriers Opt for Gender-Neutral, Urinal-Free Bathrooms

http://www.advocate.com/politics/military/2012/07/11/new-class-navy-carriers-will-forego-urinals

For the first time ever, a new class of U.S. Navy carriers will set off with no urinals on board, reports the Navy Times.

Urinals are omitted from the Gerald R. Ford class of carriers, due to hit the fleet in 2015, as both a cost-saving measure and an attempt to make bathrooms more gender-neutral. Urinal-free ships allow the Navy to easily switch a bathroom's designation between male and female, helping the ship adapt to changing crews. The U.S. Navy has deployed women on ships since 1994, but every carrier built since then has included urinals.

Hey, it will stop the guys pee on their shoes (or their neigbours?) in heavy seas...

Never happened.  We just swayed with the motion.  We tried to avoid heavy seas, but there were times that most of the crew were in their racks, seasick, during that time and we had a modified routine.  These guys rode the porcelain bus.  A large flat bottomed carrier such as the JFK really swayed when the seas got rough enough.  You can feel the gravity change as you walked down the passageways or across the hangar bay.  I never got seasick, but I went out into a covered weather deck once and saw some dolphins play in the 60' to 80' waves in the North Sea.

I guess the true outcome of this policy is that the girls are going to learn to pee standing

Yeah this does not change the fact I got DQ'd twice, once from the Marines which I still very much want to be part of, and once from the Army National Guard. I could have served and still be serving the Marine Corps since I was 18. I am 21 now.

Do any of you know when trans people are going to be accepted into the US Military? I figure it is not too late to join at 21/2.

I missed as well in the morning.  You aim straight in it, the stream decides to do a lateral.  Some of the heads were quite bad.  Especially the ones off of the forward mess deck and bomb elevators/processing area on deck 1.  Our shop unit ship's company berthing is in that area and we had to use that shower/head.  The squadron ones were clean when I was berthed a couple times there.  HEY! Bang, bang, bang! Navy shower in there!

This brings up the original purpose of the famed 'Plank'

A fine place where seafaring barnacles, crustaceans and the like could make their contribution to the great mother ocean and  they and others could applaud or boo and hold up numbered signs regarding performance should they be remotely literate

5 yrs at Sea, 1 yr on a Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG-aka "Can") and 4 yrs on a Guided Missile Cruiser (CG)!

Now you will only have to clean toilets and shower stalls. Progress takes time!

Can you tell? May you? Progress takes time, so... I'm learning.

Oh, ... "accelerate your life"... really?!
OK, maybe in an F-14 Tomcat?

We did F-104 Starfighter and F-4 Phantom - only with a tie on  ;D

Exhilarating (accelerating?) enough that was, and no one got seasick either, see?  ::)

Eugh! I have a slight phobia of water so there is no way you could get me to serve on a ship. I'll stick with the Royal Air Force, thank you. ^_^

Luftwaffe?

Only time I wore a tie (USAF) was on parade, when the wing King retired. And Basic, but that doesn't count LOL...
