Hello all
i don't really go onto forums much, escpecially ones that involve things of a personal nature, but hey there is a first time for anything,anyway..some info about myself!
my name is Blake, i am 29 years old, a college student and i have always known something was different about myself, started at the age of five i guess, when i would run outside with no shirt on to play with the boys of the neighborhood,my mother never did react well to that...that was fallowed by my obsession with catching snakes..frogs..anything and everything..diving into the creek, running through the house covered in mud, throwing tantrums when my evil mother made me wear dresses, playing with gi joes..thunder cats toys and other things my mother did not approve of...,you can see where this is going lol. anyway i have lived as as my somewhat true self (i say somewhat because i still have some body parts that really..should not be there!) for the past 12 years since i moved out, could never be myself at all around my mother, just recently have i begun looking around for a therapist so i can begin my transition, i have informed my mother..she handled it well enough, did not disown me which is nice,my partner is being supportive and my roommates have offered to help me in anyway they can through the process
one thing that irks me..massively is how expensive a legal name/gender change is on documents and such..that is unfortunatly going to have to wait a few years for me due to the sheer cost of it,i am a college student that survives on what pathetic funds financial aid gives me, but..due to my roommate offering..i can atleast begin testosterone when i am approved..and get my top surgery due to my roommate offering up her care credit card, i will just be stuck with a semi girly name for a couple years until i can come up with the massive costs that my damn state demands to make my change "legal" bastards...alright..rant done  ;D

Hi Blake ,

A big Aussie welcome to Susan's family. It's good of you to drop in and say "Hi". Hope you like it here, and you stay for a while.

Nothing unusual about your upbringing. Sounds pretty normal to me. Fabulous you have such a supportive Mum. You are quite lucky in that respects. Treat her well.

There is a mountain of information, resources and friendship waiting for you here, you just need to jump in and start talking.

Looking forward to hearing more of your story in time to come, but in the meantime, be safe, well and happy.

Lotsa huggs
Catherine

oh i think it's more shock on her part than actually being supportive lol,she did let me have the whole "it's not natural"speech when i told her..but somehow that just went in one ear and right out the other,to be honest  no matter what she feels about it,they are her feelings and not mine, i am doing this to make ME happy, not her,if later her feelings get negative i will just ignore it, it is not her place to inform me how i can run my life, my descision has been years in the making and is not a random out of the blue descision(which she thinks it is) the few things she said that i will be sticking by is that she told me to do what makes me happy and to not give a F about whatever anyone else thinks, but i do know for a fact, she is not the kind of person that will want to be with me through this journey, she just is not comfortable with it really lol

Hi Blake,

Well I understand your Mum. She just isn't aware that it IS, quite, natural. GID is a recognised MEDICAL condition, caused by several main factors, not limited to genetics, hormones, environmental aspects. It is like any other birth defect.

Not everything goes according to plan for every pregnancy. We are by no means all perfect when we come out. It's often our parents perspective that puts us on this impractical pedestal, from which we fall.

So, maybe to gain an extra member on your support team, who will see you through, perhaps some knowledge of your condition will put her at easy.

Keep in touch and let us know how you are coping.

Be safe, well and happy
Lotsa huggs
Catherine

Hi Blake,
I saw from your other post that you were in the LA area. One thing to know about name changes in California - you can apply for a filing fee reduction or forgiveness with the court based on your income and expenses, so you may be able to pay considerably less than the $400 with the court if you don't mind doing extra paperwork. You will still need to pay the $90 to $100 for the publishing, but it may not be something that you have to wait years for if it is the right thing for you to do.
History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.
