Death Sentence? The Public Perception of Transgender Women of Color

Persistence in murder rate indicates gross lack of public empathy for LGBT's minority

If George W. Bush didn't "care about black people," then people generally don't care about the lives of transgender women of color.

That's not exactly the way writer and activist Janet Mock put it. She and others believe a rash of murders, as well as uneven media coverage, suggest a gross lack of empathy for gender non-conforming individuals.

Mock, a 29-year-old Hawaii native, was her parents' firstborn son. She transitioned when she was a teenager and is aware of her privilege of not having her gender identity questioned by society.

Most who are murdered, are murdered by someone they knew.  More than 94%.  About that much are murdered by someone in their own ethnic group.  This is true here too.
A female in the African ethic group was and still is the lowest rung on the US social ladder, despite the ascention of women such as Maya Angelou, Condoleezza Rice, Oprah Winfrey and other black women regarded in high places in our society.  The gangsta rap I hear in my neighborhood is still filled with misogynistic lyrics, aimed mainly at women of color.  The transgender are an ambiguity in most cultures in the world, including the many cultures in this country.  The gay people often get more respect than those of us, especially MtF's who are changing gender.
Medically, I can more likely now live as long as my aunts and grandmother, in their late 80's and into their 90's.  But realistically, I would have at least a 10% chance of dying in the hands of another within the next 7 years of coming out.  Neat stats, yes?

I keep hearing the old Steppenwolf song "Monster" in a different light.  It was about Vietnam, but is just as applicable to my Trans brothers and sisters in the US.

"America we need you now,
Don't you care about your sons and daughters."

Most people here, regardless of how conservative,  really can't understand what goes on in the US in the area of "race".  Personally I regard it as a null concept, and a delusion altogether.

here's a website I found that shows how dangerous the UK is now but it seems that maybe half of all murders are random by strangers.

we hear of murders of Asian females by male relatives over the choice of partner in so-called honour killings and a few of the Afro dead are by white trash but so many people are half crazy and unpredictable these days.
