Hey, no idea if this topic is still open for debate, but here goes...
If the scar is contoured, a spot of dermabrasion may help soften its appearance. It removes the top layer of scar tissue to smooth out the indent. Its a surgical procedure and takes time to heal, so you may not be up for it if the scar doesn't particularly bother.
A dermaroller is much less invasive and prompts the release of collagen around the area to encourage skin rejuvenation, so that could be ideal. Personally, I haven't tried it though.
As for more mundane methods, I've tried Bio-oil for several years. It didn't do much, other than slightly change the coloration. Vitamin E oil worked well, but I've had much better results on Mederma - its price usually fluctuates on Amazon, so you may get it for somewhere in your price range. For older scars however, you may have to use it regularly for upwards of 6 months.
(FWIW I was assaulted several years ago and received 80+ stitches to my face, so you could say its a passion of mines)
