I trying to change my name and gender at the same time with DMV and Social Security.  I have had my top surgery and have my Certified Court Order in hand along with letter from my surgeon who did my top surgery.  My question is I heard that you also have to have letter from surgeon stating that you have also had a complete hysterectomy too.  I had a partial hysterectomy (just took uterus) about 6 yrs ago for medical reasons.  Have any of you had to have proof of both or was top surgery enough.  Not sure it matters but I live in upstate NY.  Thanks in advance for any and all advice on this.

I think you have to have bottom surgery in order to change your gender marker with the SSA. I'm not sure if a hysto would be considered bottom surgery, but I'm not sure.

To change your gender marker on an ID:

Form 4214-LAM License Amendments Proof Of Sex Change In order to amend a driver license to reflect a sex change, a statement from the physician, psychologist or psychiatrist must accompany the request. The statement must be on their letterhead and must certify the one gender predominates over the other and the licensee in question is either a male or female. Staple the statement to the Application for Driver license, Form MV-44.

For getting your info changed on your ID in NY you just need a doctor's letter saying you identify as such and such thing or are undergoing treatment tho change your sex.

I haven't had hysterectomy/bottom surgery yet - just top surgery but i was able to change my gender marker with Social Security Administration. Is your surgeon's letter explicit in mentioning that you only had top surgery? BTW, I am from NJ but it should be the same process in NY since SSA is federal.

I know transguys and girls who have had their surgeons word their letters vaguely ("my patient has undertaken all necessary surgical steps to transition to male/female") and had that pass muster with the SSA regardless how many or which surgeries the person had.

I was under the impression that chest surgery counts as SRS.....

My letter from the surgeon that did my Orchi says "irreversible genital surgery" and a court order with my new name was all I needed for a Hawaii birth cert reissue, with my new BC and letters the rest just fell into place,  I was just lucky I guess having been born in Hawaii there policy is very liberal ;-)

Thanks everyone for all your feedback.  I have a letter from my surgeon, but it is specific and says top surgery as a part of SRS.  I do have my court order for the name and gender change and my new NYS drivers license with name and gender change so I am going to go today and hope it is enough.
