The city raised [a] pride flag in New Haven Wednesday afternoon in response to the removal of the large pride flag outside the Stonewall National Monument in Manhattan on Monday. The move came after the Trump administration directed in January that only the US flag and other "congressionally or departmentally authorized flags" be flown on National Park Service-managed flag poles.

"It's kind of ridiculous we have to be here today," [Mayor] Elicker said, condemning the Trump administration's targeting of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs and members of the LGBTQ+ community. "It's important we make a statement on a day like today."

Elicker emphasized that New Haven is a "welcoming city" that welcomes everyone, no matter who they are or who they love.

"He's trying to erase history," Elicker said of Donald Trump and the removal of the Stonewall National Monument's pride flag. "The very reason that monument exists is the courage of trans individuals, of LGBTQ+ individuals."

"New Haven stands side by side with our brothers and sisters in Manhattan," he said.

"We have been through this before," said the New Haven Pride Center's (NHPC) Laura Boccadoro on Wednesday about threats to the queer community. "We aren't going anywhere."

Local leaders raised the pride flag once again at the Stonewall National Monument on Thursday after the Trump administration replaced it with an American flag this week.

Community members and advocates waited to capture the moment with eager eyes, yearning to see the moment -- a piece of their history. The flag that represents their pride was hoisted up again after being taken down.

"It's an act of performative intimidation. It's kind of like in you face, we're going to do what we want," said Mark Sydel, who attended the flag raising.

The flag was taken down under new guidance from the Trump administration, stating that only U.S. flags, or flags authorized by Congress, can fly at sites run by the National Park Service.

The Federal Government took a swipe at Mayor Zohran Mamdani and local officials who have condemned the removal of the pride flag, calling the re-raising of the flag a "political stunt" and a "distraction."

But the symbol of the gay rights movement at a place that is significant to the cause is a part of U.S. history, Tracey Sydel said
