Seattle moves to recognize the rights of polyamorous partners

Greg Owen (11 Sep 2026)

Seattle moved a step closer on Wednesday to becoming the tenth American city to adopt civil rights protections for polyamorous and other "nontraditional" relationships.

A unanimous vote among the three members of the Seattle City Council's Housing, Arts and Civil Rights Committee forwarded a proposal to the full council that would amend sections of the Seattle Municipal Code to "recognize genders outside the gender binary, recognize pansexuality and asexuality as orientations, and include consensual relationships with multiple partners as an element of attitudes, preferences, and practices pertaining to sexual orientation."

The protections would apply to employment, housing, business licensure, places of public accommodation, park usage, and "bias-free policing," according to the proposal.

Seattle would follow Portland, West Hollywood, Berkeley, California, and a handful of other cities in adopting the expanded protections against discrimination. Under the bill, residents facing unfair treatment could file complaints and seek remedy through Seattle's Office for Civil Rights.

The ordinance's goal is to "prohibit discrimination based on family and relationship structure as fully as possible," Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck, the bill's sponsor, said at the committee hearing on Wednesday, as reported by Axios.

"We all know that every family is different, and we need to be clear that every family receives equal protection under the law," Rinck said. "And chosen family is family."

"This update reflects how people actually live," Rinck added.

Jokes aside - if a group ever ties the knot legally then I wonder how divorce works? It must be a legal nightmare that is the stuff lawyers dream of.

All I can say is only in Seattle although others tend to follow after Seattle generally. Hugs

I am glad they are taking action.

Every aspect of our lives is being infringed upon by someone. And has been for a long time.

You can't do that without this piece of paper, and you must pay the fee.

The paper must be signed by an "official," and you need to pay their fee too.

Now, you need to pay another fee to publicize the paper in a newspaper for thirty days, and pay the newspaper for printing it.

Then, you need to fill out another form and have the newspaper sign it to verify that the publication happened.

Then you must pay another filing fee to file the form certifying the publication.

Then we can schedule an appointment for a judge to sign a different form to make it legal.

After the judge signs the form, it still isn't legal until you file the signed form with the rest of the forms.

Nothing says "I love you" like a mountain of paper and costly fees.

What I find so amazing is the fact that three or more people could actually want to live together. It was enough of a challenge finding just one person who could tolerate me!
