Presbyterians Re-ordain First Openly Gay Minister

Scott Anderson left the Presbyterian Church twenty-one years ago after coming out to his congregation. This weekend, the Presbyterian Church came to its senses and made him Rev. Scott Anderson.

News reports tout that Anderson is the "the first gay minister" ordained by PCUSA, but that's not the case. Plenty of gay and lesbian ministers have been ordained in the PCUSA before him - the difference is Anderson is the first openly gay person to be given the title. Those who were ordained in their closets long before Anderson may now come out - and they are to be credited for laying the groundwork for Anderson's achievement.

Presbyterian Church USA to Ordain First Gay Minister

Scott Anderson, an official with the Wisconsin Council of Churches, is set to be the first openly homosexual man to be ordained a pastor in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on Saturday.

The decision to remove sexual conduct from PC(USA) ordination vows is symptomatic of a deeper, ongoing struggle within the church over the authority of holy scripture," said Presbyterian Action Committee Chairman Gary Green. "This action stands in contradiction to the PCUSA confessions of faith, which continue to teach that faithful Christians have the choice either to be faithful in marriage or chaste in singleness."

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- More than two decades after Scott Anderson told his California congregation that he was gay and therefore must resign as its pastor, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) is preparing to welcome him back with mostly open arms.

Anderson will be ordained Saturday in his new home of Madison, Wis., as the denomination's first openly gay minister, marking the latest mainline Protestant church to move toward accepting homosexual relationships.

LOUISVILLE

The General Assembly Permanent Judicial Commission has dismissed a challenge to the ordination of Scott Anderson, which means that Anderson – a gay man who set aside his ordination in 1990 after congregants publicly revealed his sexual orientation – may once again be ordained by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

But the commission remanded back to the Synod of the Pacific Permanent Judicial Commission a case involving Lisa Larges, a lesbian who has sought ordination in the PC(USA) for roughly a quarter-century.
