Topeka Unified School District 501 board of education members Thursday night voted 6-1 to include sexual orientation and gender expression in the district's anti-discrimination policies regarding students and staff.

During their Nov. 3 meeting, board members approved the first reading of language additions to the policies — specifically, the words "sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression."

Cindy Kelly, the district's attorney, said the policy additions were recommended by the U.S. Department of Education in an advisory noting that bullying and harassment of students due to sexual orientation or gender identity is rising.
