I have a new Therapist through a bit of luck.
Three months ago I went to a local doctor saying that I was depressed and if I could have anti depressants. He refused and said that I should go to the local mental health service. I said also that could he give me a referral to another private psychiatrist as I was unhappy with the previous one I had been seeing. He did so but, when I rang them to make an appointment, they said they had closed their books for the year.
So I rang the local mental health service and explained my situation, they deemed me as non urgent and said they would contact my doctor, so that he would help. After being ping ponged back and forth between the two several times, the mental health service finally agreed to see me four weeks ago. I was prescribed anti depressants by a psychiatrist and asked to come back in three weeks time for a review of how I was coping.
I went back on Monday under the assumption that I would just be seeing a case worker. I actually got to see another psychiatrist and he said that he was aware of my gender issues. He asked if I could come back once a week for four to six weeks so that he could learn more about me and that he maybe or may not be able to provide a letter, depending on the outcome of the therapy.
I asked him if he had any experience with Transgender patients and he replied no. He did say however that for a start that he was gay and that he did have the WPATH soc ver 6. I informed him that ver 7 of SOC had just been released two months ago and he replied that he would look it up.
My first meeting was today and it went very well. I find it very easy to talk to him and even laugh at certain things. He is nothing like my first psychiatrist who was very crude, intimidating and not willing to make anything work.
I feel very positive about this new psychiatrist but, should I be cautious for the fact that he doesn't have prior experience or does that not particularly matter as long as he is willing to learn and give the impression that he wants to help?
