Mikael (Zoé Héran) is the new boy in town. He makes new friends easily, including Lisa (Jeanne Disson), and, since his family has arrived during the summer break, he spends a lot of time with his pals frolicking in the woods and at the swimming hole.

But once he's back home with his pregnant mother (Sophie Cattani), hard-working father (Mathieu Demy), and little sister Jeanna (Malonn Lévana), things are different: Mikael is Laure, daughter, sister, and the "Tomboy" of the title.

To keep his friends convinced that he's a boy, Mikael resorts to the occasional trick, such as stuffing an appropriately-shaped piece of clay into his swimming trunks. He even brings Jeanne along to play, and the precocious youngster joins right in, telling tall tales about how her "brother" fought off anyone who teased her and broke the hearts of all the girls in the town where they used to live.
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
