Gires Trustee, Bernard Reed, OBE, an advocate of the new treatment, told The Huffington Post: "The internet and online forums have been a major factor in spreading knowledge and giving sufferers the confidence to seek help."

He added: "We have been campaigning since 2005 to bring Britain in line with other countries, such as Belgium and Canada, by offering children the opportunity to suspend the process of puberty while they make a decision."

Until now, under-16s in Britain seeking treatment for Gender Identity Disorder had the choice of going overseas or waiting until the age of 16 to proceed with gender reassignment surgery.

Nice to see the NHS making an attempt to join the real world instead of living in the dark ages. Unfortunately too late for my age group but a great step forward even if i am a little(lot) jealous.

Britain's National Health Service (NHS) has agreed to fund hormone injections for six gender-confused, pre-adolescent children. The purpose of the hormone injections is to postpone puberty, giving the children, 11 and 12 years old, time to decide if they want to undergo a sex operation.

Gender dysphoria is a rare condition that affects 1 in 4,000 Britons, according to the NHS website. It occurs when an individual is born of one sex but is convinced they are of the other sex, the organization explains. Symptoms usually occur early on in childhood, when the individual will play with toys and wear clothes traditionally used by the opposite sex.

Six children in Britain will be given jabs to delay the puberty on the NHS because they are convinced they were born the wrong sex.

The injections - to be administered monthly - will postpone the physical changes of adolescence giving them more time to make decisions about their identity.

It will also make any sex-change operation far easier should they decide to permanently swap gender.

But the matter is now a fact. It seems highly unlikely it will be stopped in the near future. Such are the workings of the NHS.

But the follow up may make things different. There will be some in the program who change their minds. Hopefully none of those are roped into making a fuss in the hope of comepnsation. Equally, that the majority, who will continue to SRS and a decent life will stand up and defend it.
