Almost got outed by pharmacy today. Doctor put on prescription not to run prescription through my insurance. Come to find out after looking at the package that they had in fact run it through my insurance. Fortunately got them to reverse the charges hoping that it wo't show up on the computer at insurance. Pharmacy told me that since they reversed the charges that it won't show on insurance but I still steamed that a pharmacy would accidently ignore doctors orders!

Unless you live in a small town, I guess that could be an exception.

Its not so much the outing to insurance company I haven't told my employer about my transition. So if the insurance calls my employer I could possibly lose my job and that is why I don't want the insurance company to know.

Maybe I'm new to how all this works, but shouldn't your insurance records be private and not accessible to your employer?

you might be correct. I'm honestly not sure how that works b/c I get my health insurance through my job. Since most companies give health insurance are the companies completely separate and private and not accessible to the employer?? I didn't think about them being separate entities. For some reason, I just assumed that the employer who was giving the insurance to the employee would have access to the records but now that I think about it, I bet they can't give out private health information to the employer without the employees consent.

Your medical records are totally confidential from your employer. They cannot legally access them and the insurance cannot legally tell anyone what procedures you have had done. And it is not in the interest of anyone to know.

This is exactly correct. If your medical records are released to your employer, you wont need that employer anymore, because you'd have a pretty nice lawsuit on your hands.

HIPAA is in place for that"exact" reason. "Exact" meaning that your medical history, treatments and records can NOT be disclosed to anyone other than yourself and anyone else you choose.  My dad has worked in Hospitals for as long as I can remember and the medical community is pretty big on fallowing those rules because there are FEDERAL penalties that can come back on them.  Example my dad had heart surgery in the same hospital that he worked in and his boss didn't even know he was there because of HIPAA. At least that's the case in the states, overseas it may be different.

          I do believe that there is a privacy act the same as with a Dr and patient.  They cannot talk about who is on what meds to anyone without approval from the patient or some sort of court order.
