NIU to host Aug. 30 conference on transgender
August 19, 2013

[Northern Illinois University] will host mental health providers from the DeKalb community and Chicago suburbs Friday, Aug. 30, for a conference focused on the needs of the transgender population.

The conference is a collaborative effort between the Counseling & Student Development Center and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center.

Over the past few years, transgender identity has gained visibility in the national media and on NIU's campus. Campus events such as "Trans 101," Spring 2013 featured speaker Mara Keisling (executive director of the National Center on Transgender Equality) and student social group "Transitions" have been well attended by the NIU and DeKalb communities.

Campus and community mental health providers who attend will have an opportunity to learn more about the details of transgender identity while gaining professional development and further contributing to an inclusive community at NIU and beyond.

Moreover, transgender students and community members will be better served by local providers who take advantage of the workshop.
