In all Tveter's efforts to transform herself, changing her name seems like one of the simpler steps, yet is taking longer than many other changes. Unable to afford court fees of close to $1,000, Tveter is relying on California common law to change her name without a legal procedure.

After two years of fighting with the school, her quest has become as much a matter of principle as of frugality.

"The laws say they're not to discriminate on the basis of gender, and a common-law name change is legal," she said.
