I upgraded my Java and now I'm unable to get into the chat. I get an error message that says click for details. A popup opens saying there's a security exception and the following, "Missing required Permissions manifest attribute in main jar: https://www.susans.org/chat/classes/jirc_nss.jar

Anyone know how to fix this?

I sent a PM to the Chat Administrator with your post here.

It still doesn't work.

I found a way around it. Add the site that's listed in the error details and this url "https://www.susans.org/chat/index.html" to your security exceptions in your Java control panel.

Okay, but, there's just one problem: I am really stupid. How do you do this?

Hi!

I'm sorry you're having trouble with the JAVA client.  While it's still the best one we know of that can be used via the website I usually recommend people get an irc client program like Chatzilla or IceChat if they are going to be regular users of the chat rooms.  There are a lot of irc clients available and many of them are free.  When I started going to the chat rooms I used Chatzilla (from Mozilla).  mIRC is free for thirty days and then begs for $20 every time you open it but it's a decent client for Windows.  That's the one I use.

There are a number of Apple and Linux clients as well but I don't know much about them.

hugs & smiles,
HelenW

If you have a Mac, go to system preferences, then java, the java control panel should open up in another window. Under the security tab go to edit site list. Add these two URLs separately without the quotes, "https://www.susans.org/chat/classes/jirc_nss.jar" "https://www.susans.org/chat/index.html" then hit ok, apply, and you're all set. Might want to restart your browser after.
