Any suggestions for hair styles that are good at covering receding hairline?

Sorry for yet another hair question.  If we have any beauticians or hairstylists in the house, what are some good hairstyles to aim for which would cover a hairline that has receded slightly?

Grasping at straws...

Hi,
As you can see I'm in the same boat.  Minoxidil and Finisteride have helped, but the results are, so far at least, not perfect.  Where I get my hair done they counsel patience to allow things to grow out enough to give them something to work with.  Patience I'm not so good at.  So any tips that get posted here I will also be gratefully interested in.

Thanks for starting this thread - it is something I think too much about.   ;)

Yeah, that is where I'm headed I think, but once upon a time I had my hair below my shoulders and loved it.  Damn testosterone.

Yeah... I am somewhat in the same boat. While my hair is down past my shoulder the o'l forehead is somewhat pronounced yet and sill. I tried combing it forward but my hair is real fine so it didn't look very good, so I settled on just parting it in the middle for now. Interested in what others have to say also... Would prefer not to have to use a wig, but perhaps that is a last resort...

I have same problems- thin hair and hairline paranoia. I had shoulder-length hair but because my hair is fine, I felt my head looked big. So, I searched for a gay hairstylist and went for a short style...bam, my face instantly looked smaller and hair appeared thicker! Go for a short style with bangs and you might be surprised, with a good hairstylist. I suggest finding a male stylist- not saying women can't be good but it's a fact most female stylists hate to make their clients look better than them due to jealously- men aren't jealous and actually use your hair as art with their artistic eyes, if that makes sense. I get compliments on my hair from strangers all the time.

It depends upon where you fall on the norwood scale.

It is very difficult to appear to have a female hairline even with bangs when you are a norwood 2 and beyond.

You also may be able to recover some hair from your hairline with medications alone depending on where you are on the norwood scale.

To treat and prevent hereditary hair loss you should be using Finisteride or dutasteride daily.

You also should be using 2% ketoconazole shampoo or  you can get a prescription from a dermatologist or you can buy Nizoral 1% shampoo at walmart. You should use either no more than once per week, any more than that is counter productive.

You also, depending on the extent of your hair loss, can use minoxidil 2 times per day.

You should also use LLLT. The brand is HairMax lasercomb, LLLT won't actually halt hereditary hair loss or regrow lost hair alone but it will help your hair appear thicker and enhance the quality of the hair you have left.

Estrogen does absolutely nothing to halt or reverse hereditary hair loss in any way, but it does improve the quality of the hair you have left.

A hairline is near impossible to recover with medication alone, with the exception of being very young and the hair loss being recent as well as the hair loss not being more than a "mature male hairline" which on the norwood scale is a 1 or 2.

Any treatments you use will be a lifelong commitment until a cure for hereditary hair loss has been found.

My hair was really awful before I started HRT/finasteride/minoxidil...I was probably somewhere between Norwood scale 2 or 3.

I hate to post this pic, but here it goes:

Now, after about seven months, a lot of my hair came back...but the corners are almost the same. I don't have my hair cut since January 2013 :/ (I have just woke up, so everything is messy, from my hair to my bed :p)

The frontal hair is growing back, but it is still weak and fine and it is not getting a good length, so I can't cover the bald spots with it.

A hairstylist told me to wait because there was nothing he could do about it. My only hope is that my frontal hair can grow past this lenght and cover the bald spots.

So, here I am...waiting.

If I had longer hair I am quite sure I could already be receiving strange looks around there, but my hairline screams male and, even with my hair touching my shoulders, I can't get a feminine look without having to wear a wig :p

I also accept any sugestions! =D

I'd also point out there are a ton of YouTube videos showing some neat makeup tricks that show how to reduce the appearance of receding hairlines.

Natalia,

It is hard for me to tell how much your hair has recovered without some good quality before photos.

From what I can see you seem to be a well established Norwood 3.

It is unfortunate but as I said once the hairline has been established it is not recoverable without hair transplant surgery, with the exception being those who are young and start treatment soon after the hair loss has occurred and the hair line not being fully established at the time treatment began.

You should add nizoral once a week to your regimen, as well as LLLT. It is possible for you to have a feminine head of hair again. Anything beyond a norwood 5 is not recoverable to a femenine head of hair.

Hey Natalia, you should be fine as it comes back in and gets longer.  I have similar curly hair to yours. While you are waiting for it to get long, that curl will be a benefit as with some curl enhancing conditioner to help it, the length will curl up and add body and volume at your bangs and temples (low maintenance too, you just kinda scrunch it up and go!).

Your pics and the discussion about hair loss chems reminded me of a funny bit that happened to me. I'd read where while officially Minoxidil doesn't work on frontal recession, some have said it does, so I decided to try it out. Well of course it started to shed at the leading edge, not only that but I think I was also "chasing" my hairline with the stuff for about a week. LOL! Lost about a half an inch of hair from that experiment, but it's coming back so its all good. I have lots of little very fine hairs starting to poke through at my temples as long dormant hair follicles start waking up.
