QuoteIn a Friday appearance on "The Janet Mefferd Show," Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality criticized "grotesque" and "awful" sex reassignment surgeries for transgender individuals and insisted that the doctors who perform such surgeries should be put in jail.

"These doctors who perform these operations — this should be illegal — these guys need to go to jail, this is almost the most analogues thing to the abortionist on that issue I can think of," LaBarbera said. "These doctors exploiting these gender confused individuals and making money off of them."

Opinions are like a*holes and a*holes always have opinions.

Why am I suddenly thinking about that Monty Python sketch, "Spot the Looney"?

Methinks thou dost protest too much, dude(?).

Transition is the only proven effective treatment for this particular brand of "confusion" as he calls it, so even his ignorance that it is a medical condition doesn't change that he's suggesting surgeons go to prison for increasing their patients' quality of life. The comparison to abortion is baffling. Abortion and SRS are two procedures with presumably no impact on this guy's life, and he doesn't want other people to have access to those procedures, but other than that what do they have in common?

When people call it a medical condition and suggest treatment of the person's brain or personality, I tend to compare it to brain transplants. Imagine if your parents went to the doctor seeking a cure for your transness or gayness or whatever. Imagine if the doctor suggested a brain transplant as the cure.

"We've got a cure! We have this person who's on life support but their brain is quite healthy and they have no trans issues or homosexuality issues or anything of the sort. We've developed the technology to do brain transplants. Your (son or daughter) will not experience dysphoria ever again."

That "cure" is DEATH. It's the end of the person they were and replacing them with someone else. And trying to turn a boy into a girl or a girl into a boy MENTALLY is like asking someone to be a different person. That's why even a dramatic physical change is less drastic than such "solutions". Forcing an end to a person's mental gender is also a kind of death to a certain degree.

Yep, and it's sad that trans* people are the ones who are considered to have a "Mental disorder" When here we have people admitting that they care more about a stranger's genitals than their brain. In my book, that makes me concerned for their mental health.

Haven't you ever heard the old saying, "A sane person questions their own sanity but an insane person is convinced they are sane." Sounds to me like Peter LaBarbera is convinced he is sane.

As predictably repugnant and uninformed as the opinion is, I originally misread the title as 'Doctor Who Performs Sex Reassignment Surgery.' That would be quite an interesting episode.*blushes*  :P
"In the middle of the journey of our life, I came to myself in a dark wood, where the straight way was lost. It is a hard thing to speak of, how wild, harsh and impenetrable that wood was, so that thinking of it recreates the fear. It is scarcely less bitter than death: but, in order to tell of the good that I found there, I must tell of the other things I saw there." - Dante Alighieri

Except wood and cooking turkey! Now I just need to invent time-travel so I can use one in transition...
