Christy

Hi, I'm Christy

I'm male to female transgender and in my late thirties. I've recently begun taking my first steps toward transitioning. For years my family held me back or rather I let them. I was also very scared of what people would say and how I would be treated. I still am but no where near as much. I found a very supportive roommate who is female to male transgender and although doing exactly the opposite of what I am still has been through a lot of the same things.

My roommate is actually the one who sent me here. He says he can only answer so many of my questions because he knows very little about women's clothing or makeup or anything else female. So I'm looking for transwomen to ask questions to. I'm still not on hormones as money is an issue but I have begun buying makeup and female clothing. My goal is to be confidant enough to go out as a woman in public by October. So my question is where do I begin? I don't think throwing on a skirt and some flats and just going out would work. How do you slowly transition your clothing? Inside I am a girly girl so I want female clothing, especially dresses but I know that's not where to start. I live in an apartment complex in a small town in NC *ewwwww* which means there are bigots in the area. Where do I start?

Hey Christy, welcome! There are many people who are transitioning at your age here so I'm sure you'll find people to relate to. :) One of the most important steps is to find a gender therapist, they will be the most helpful in your transition and being able to start hrt. There are so many things you can do to help you feel more feminine. You can try shaving, wearing more feminine clothing, changing your voice if you wish, make-up and growing your hair out! These changes can just be subtle ones too if that makes you more comfortable for the time being. Try experimenting at home too, this will give you a space where you can be yourself with the support of your room-mate.

Try looking online for some transgender support groups around your area, they can be very helpful and offer great support. Good luck and don't let anyone get in your way of being who you are. Their opinions are ignorant and have no basis to them.
