OTTAWA - A group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Tories says now is the time to drop language opposing same-sex marriage from Conservative party policy.

The party's need to rebuild after the fall election provides an opportunity to get rid of a policy that's offensive and hurts the party's chances for growth, a group called LGBTories says and they are asking interim party leader Rona Ambrose for help.

"This policy is a significant obstacle to the acceptance of the Conservative message by voters who would otherwise be attracted to the party's stance on economic, security, and foreign policy issues," they wrote in a letter to her made public this week

Exactly!  US Republicans and Canadian Tories are locking themselves into the same box.  Their exclusionary and discriminatory party programs are repellant to younger voters, while their most bigoted adherents are gradually dying off.  The demographic trends are clear - if these parties fail to change, their own positions will gradually marginalize them into political insignificance.

But the US republicans don't want to change.  The only way I can possibly see change is if a significant part of GOP parents had a son/daughter come out, but then it will probably be too late.

I don't know why they do what they do, I have no reason in my head to condemn you people.

It's very easy to understand the Republican position on LGBT.  It's because of the evangelical stranglehold on the party that has existed since the 1980's.  So in a nutshell it's because of their Christian beliefs.  They believe that all the problems in America are due to God's punishment for low morals and that the solution is to rid the land of those who don't follow their interpretation of biblical law.

If you don't believe this is the reason all you have to do is read some conservative and Christian forums.  They are quite brazen in saying exactly that.

The only way the party can change is to dump their evangelical base and right now that will leave nobody remaining to vote for them.
