The hand mirror was practically glued in Dakota Yorke's hand Saturday afternoon as hairstylist Kristine Jewett back-combed her massive tangle of brunette curls.

A budding cosmetologist in her own right, Yorke naturally had a style in mind for her first prom as herself — a wild confection of twists and tendrils sprouting from the back of her head. She squealed delightedly with just about every bobby pin Jewett slid in.

"As a cosmetologist myself, people bring in pictures all the time, and I always tell them it's not going to look exactly the way you think, but it's still fun," Yorke said. "I can't wait to see (my hair)."

Though she didn't win, I think she gained a lot of positive exposure for the transgender cause. Congrats Dakota still on being Runner Up!

You know my feelings about the fact that this sort of thing makes headlines.

Trans people will know we are truly thought of as human beings when it's no longer headline material when one of us does something that thousands of cisgender people have done.
Have you read my short story The Eve of Triumph?
