News is getting to me

Maybe I need to go live in a cave somewhere.  Or at least unplug my Internet.

I usually avoid the front page of Susan's because of the depressing headlines.  But a new one just popped up on my Facebook feed.  Here are four headlines that I collected in less than a minute without hardly trying (one was not from Susan's):
- This Lawmaker Wants To Make Absolutely Sure No Law Protects Transgender People
- HRC Condemns House Freedom Caucus' Alarming Demand to Revoke Crucially Important LGBTQ Protections
- Trump Ally Calls for Incoming Administration to Purge State Department of Pro-LGBTQ Employees
- University ignored warnings about far-right speaker, leaving him free to bully trans student on stage

I have to read the articles because I have to know the enemy.  But then I know. 🙁

I know the news is not all bad, and I rejoice in the victories large and small that the members here share.  I know that the dinosaurs will not last forever.  But it is hard to bear the gleeful hate as they rise to power.

I just need a good AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I see the headlines, and it's a nine year old transgender girl on the front cover of National Geographic. That gives me hope. Hope that the days of hiding are over. Don't dwell on bad news when there's so much good to be found.

I haven't read a newspaper, watched TV or listened to the radio since early November.  I unplugged it all.
And I'm a political junkie!

Plus side. I've read a lot about transgender history since then.  And I read this forum a lot more.

Same here. And I feel a lot less stressed I have to say. It might be a total "head in the sand" denial tactic but I just have no better way of coping at the moment.

Same here. After the election I pretty much stopped reading / watching news. I simply could not deal with it. It is better now but I am not back to my usual news consumption. I am really scared about the next 4 years  😮

You all are right, of course.  I shouldn't read the bad news, but I just can't help it.  And, Devlyn, I am looking forward to getting that issue of National Geographic in the mail.  It should be here this week.  Yes, there is good news, too.  Thank goodness.

I find the news out of the USA utterly depressing as well.

There's the odd ray of light. That National Geographic is really amazing, and I thought this article was hopeful.

The sociopath right is organizing boycotts against NatGeo because of this article. I read somewhere this little girl is receiving death threats. Absurd.

I limit my contact to the news especially for our American friends who could be in for one hell of a ride over the next 4 years...

Anything I read coming out of there feels like its time to batten down the hatches...feels like a storm is brewing...

I don't bother with TV news, radio news or printed news. It's all junk. Online I don't read it either. I stopped my smartphone subscription and went back to an ordinary text and Talk phone. I use free wifi when I can.

The more I see of electronics and the internet the more I dislike them. It all seems so catchpenny. In fact, today I bought a couple of books!

I think it's easy to get worried by rubbish spouted online and in the press. You just have to remember if it comes from the media the odds are it's deliberately misrepresented nonsense.

The news in general sucks these days. Even worse when there's usually an ideological agenda attached to it.

Just take a break from it. None of us are getting medals for carrying the weight of the world.

sadly my brain has been desensitized as far as the news which is good because when I was in college I complained to my Psychiatrist that I couldn't even read the newspaper because I would cry . Of course that was the year that Nixon through the Constitution in the toilet. I hope not to offend anyone by my example of news going sour.

KathyLauran, the noise from the media can do devastating things to a spirit but as you mentioned, so many of the stories on Susan's do such wonders at lifting the heart. I don't know if you saw Cindy's review of her past year on Ms. Grace's thread. Her testimony about her incredible struggles and coming out saying that now she has learned how to live. Wow, listening to how so many on this site continue to seek out and take the high road will offset all of the down side junk from the mainstream news articles. - Anne

 The goal of the media is to sell advertising space. Hence, the "news" they publish is heavily filtered to be frightening, sensational, emotional or titilating, not honest. I refuse to buy into their crap.

That's not how I view it.  I actually think the newspaper industry in USA does a pretty good job.  Yes they have to sell ads. Nobody works for free.
It's the actual news itself that upsets me so.

There's news everywhere. What's published is filtered by editors to sell copy.

I'm fortunate that I am living in southern Thailand, so I watch international news channels on cable TV. Most of the newscasters were dismayed at the Trump win, if not downright horrified, some calling him a "monster."

Nevertheless, I found myself refusing to watch news whenever Trump came on.
