Hey everybody! I apologize for the barrage of posts from me recently. I also apologize in advance if this is a stupid question that I should find the answers to elsewhere.  :P

So with help from my girlfriend, I have decided that regardless of support from my mother, I intend to start finding options for gender therapists. I figure it's time to make a more physical step and talk to a professional who may be able to help.

So I'm starting to look through listings online for therapists. Is there anywhere in particular I should be looking? Perhaps a database for these kinds of professionals? And what questions should I be asking them about their care and experience?

Any advice and guidance is appreciated. :)

Hi Renee,

You could start by searching  LGBTQ  + your city  That should bring up support resources for your city and you can give them a call.

Depending on where you live and what kind of healthcare you have, things vary greatly.

For example, I'm in the United States, uncovered by insurance, and was able to find therapy offered on a sliding scale at the local LGBT center.
The experience levels with free therapy, however, are generally graduate students training under a licensed therapist.

If you're not in a big city or near a University that has LGBTQ+ resources, the internet and asking around helps a lot for sure. Though I would recommend both anyways

You can take a look here. Anyone listed in our Directory is transgender friendly. Good luck!

Search Psychology Today website. They list all the therapists for a particular areas and their bios. You can also filter the results for transgender.

Thank you! :)

So I checked the directory and the closest place on there to me is the Rockford Psychiatric Medical Services in Rockford, IL. I checked their website and their website says nothing about working with trans clients. What questions should I be asking them to see if they will offer the care I'm looking for?
