I suspect that the Catholic Church has operated fairly independently in that country since religious freedom has won out. Pretty cool that they did both the conference and the mass.

It wasn't the Catholic Church.  According to the article it was the Metropolitan Community Church.  That's a LGBT affirming denomination.
