T & The Age of Balding

Getting bald, yeah... nice topic.

Does anyone here know if the age you start balding depends on your physical age, or the time you've been on T?

I mean... If you are 50 and start T, will your body read it the way 'omg I should look like a 50-year-old man and start dropping some hair follicles asap' or will your body act more like this: 'oh, raised T levels? I'm experiencing puberty again like I was 15 - no need to get bald until years/decades'?

The older you are, will the balding happen more quickly? Or just in relation to how long you've been on T?

No, and no.

It does not depend on age or time on testosterone. Some men go bald early, some men later, and some don't. Same with going grey.

It depends on your genes. I read somewhere that men on your mothers side can be indicative but it is by no meand indicative of the development on your own head.

Baldness occurs when DHT (dihydrotestosterone, a byproduct of testosterone that is converted in your body) is absorbed by your hair follicles.

The only way to reduce is, is to lower your dose or use DHT blockers which are found in products like finasteride - sometimes in combination with minoxidil.

It's part of the package you're buying unfortunately. A lot of men are dealing with this and discussing it online. Might be worth the time to look around on the world wide web.

I was 55 with still high T before HRT and I never had a hint of baldness.  So as November Fox said, it's a genetic thing, or at least there are other factors in play besides time and T level.

I've been on it a year and five months, so far it's dropped out in places above the forehead to make that male hair pattern you seen on adult men in that time. The hair thickness (of strands) have also thinned, and I think there are less hairs per follicle on the edges where it meets the face. So it went from 0 to adult male status in that time. But I don't have the level of natural recession my SO does who is also younger than me. So at this point I don't think it's "fast-forwarding" to match my age.

Those changes took place within about 6 months of starting T. I'm not "going bald" by any stretch, but compared to how my hair was before T there's a big difference.

On the plus side, my hair looks and feels better. I swear before it felt like a boar's mane and was hard to do anything with. There are no naturally bald men in the family on either side so hopefully I won't be either.

Lucky you! In my family the only one who isn't bald is my dad.....!

Weird, but I actually do believe I have a male hairline pattern already pre-T....! Unless it will look strikingly different on T ofc. But I do feel that's what it looks like. I don't have that oval female shape at all...!

You probably won't see a dramatic change when you first begin T then. I did have a slight widow's peak before, which is genetic, but now it's a bit more pronounced, but I did have that female hair pattern along the sides. When I first started T I was like, crap, I'm going bald already. But it's not gone much further than creating the zig zag male pattern on the forehead.

I think i have that sort of M shape already.... It's weird but I am embracing it  ! Unless that's my head's version of female pattern and it will receeeeede once on T! But I doubt it,  😉! Anyway it looks male pattern to me so.

I didn't go bald, but I did lose hair pretty quickly when starting T. I have a pretty pronounced receding hairline, though it is mostly just at my temples. I haven't lost any (visually) on top or in the back. That still seems to be thick and full. I am in my mid 30's and my brother (who is younger) has lost a lot of hair and did so very early so I was concerned I would become bald as well. However, I knew that potential came with the territory and I was ready to embrace it if it came to that.

I have not used any hair products to try to retain it.

The hair I did lose happened quickly - within 6 months of starting T. If it's receded more since about 9 months on, it is very very subtle and not at all noticeable in pictures compared to 9 months on T. I am now almost 4.5 years on T so I'm hoping that means I've stabilized to some degree and the hair I lose from this point will be very slow or negligible.

Back hair and baldness are the two things I wasn't super excited for. I think most cis men probably feel the same. I ended up 1-1 on that - I have tons of back hair lol.

Since your dad isn't bald I don't think its likely you will go bald on T. What might happen is that your hair gets thinner as in thinner volume, not thinner as in bald spots. Women usually have thicker hair than men.

Now, to you guys who are bald, I will give you a tip as a hairdresser. If you're bald on top and just have that hideous fringe, shave it all off! I can't even tell you how hideous that fringe looks! Its just awful!  I had a client who was bald on top and had that awful fringe. He reminded me of Larry from the 3 stooges. Every time I cut his hair I thought how butt ugly it looked. I suggested he let me just buzz all of it. Finally he did. He looked 110% better! He actually looked kind of cute. Trust me, totally bald looks way better than that fringe! And if you have an obvious comb over just know you're not fooling anyone. Every time you go out in the wind that comb over is lifting up and down and pretty much waving at everyone saying " hey look, Im bald!". Don't do it!

Yeah, if it's too thin, buzz it down or off. A lot of people have a fear of doing that but it's not half bad once you get used to it.

I have to agree that it is mostly genetic.  My two brothers take after our father and still have lots of hair.  (We are all in our 60s).  I, on the othe hand, take after my mother's side of the family.  Her brother, my uncle, was always bald as far as I knew.  My hairline started receding in my 20s, and has only stopped since I started MTF HRT.

Thanks, Julia, for your honesty  !!! Yeah, I def 100% agree... I've always thought the same! What's wrong with the guys who just don't shave it all off!!! (And most of them do just that, ofc.)

The only thing is... I look hideous as bald....... that style just doesn't suit me at ALL so I'm pretty terrified of losing my hair.... almost to the point of never going on T xD. Balding & my singing voice - my two achilles heels...
