maybe this has already been posted, but I thought it was interesting. maybe this technology could benefit the IS/TG community the same way HRT has.

Italian doctor builds new, more natural vagina
"So far, surgeons have been able to correct the condition by reconstructing a vagina out of grafted skin or from intestinal tissue, but the surgery is highly invasive, lengthy and painful. And it takes a long time to grow a normal mucosal wall.

Such women, if they have healthy ovaries, have been able to achieve pregnancy by artificial insemination but would then need a surrogate mother to carry the fertilized eggs and give birth.

"What we do is to take a little biopsy of 0.5 cm from the place the vagina should be, " Marchese said. They used an enzyme to break down the tissue and then let the immature cells, called stem cells, generate new, mucosal tissue on their own.

It took about 15 days to get a thick enough layer to transplant into the patients, Marchese said."

Tissue Engineering Opens the Door to Replacement Organs
"Last year Atala published studies showing that when cultured cells from rabbit vaginas were seeded onto a polymer scaffold and then implanted into mice, the cells formed all the tissue layers found in a normal vagina. The cells contract and can be stimulated electrically, much like normal vaginal tissue.

Other ambitious projects are also in the works. For example, an artificial uterus and an artificial vagina are being tested in rabbits, and the researchers are also testing how rabbits fare when equipped with a functional bioartificial penis. "

Very neat.  I was listening to NPR the other day when they discussed the whole cell-scaffolding thing to turn a pig's heart into a human heart, but I didn't even think about the genitals.

I was given a the links during a discussion on transplants. Yes it is very neat!

I am a studying engineer (not Bio) but imho I think the only thing that prevents this from being pursued and possibly incorporated into the current GRS is the lack of knowledge amongst most IS or GID sufferers that this technology may soon be available. If the capability of a successful operation is possible(which has technically happened in Italy with 2 different women, read page 2) an M.D at some point will attempt it.

If the community of those who suffer from IS or GID realized the benefits of this type of procedure then through their own awareness a demand for the procedure would exist.

Now, how could this work for external structures?  I could imagine a MTF getting SRS, and then later having the genital mucosa thing done to allow for a more "stretchy" vagina.  But how would it be of any use for, say, the labia?  Wouldn't some form of SRS be needed as a first step to create the structure on which to deposit such cells?

I did not see any info in the article concerning the external areas so this may only be possible after some initial form of SRS, but if you remember a few years back bio-engineers successfully grew a human ear (mostly cartilage) on the back of a mouse. If this was possible then it may also be possible to grow other external structures.

If you have time you should search for info related to Dr. Atala's work on artificial genital creation. Maybe we could find a more detailed description of exactly what he has done and what he hopes to do in the future.

This is the best news I've gotten all week (not including a convention table).

The point is, is that I thought this would be years off considering how bad science has been taking it in the ear. Poor science...

But good news. I just hope nobody ruins this idea/concept with stupid babble like always. :P

One step closer to replacing bodies I'd say, and that deserves a toast. ;D Good thing the body has nothing to do with the soul according to the American ideals. Good...

See, now this is why it is worth waiting for surgery
(never mind the lack of money )
In twenty years invasive surgery might not be neccicary
They might be able to just inject you with somthing and grow your own and with ovaries, etc.
In some ways I am glad I have to wait.
The technology is only getting better.  ;D

I am happy with news like this.

The four things humans should be spending mass amounts of money developing are:

Stem Cell Research
Alternative Fuel
Nano-Technology
Cloning.

Cloning like in that movie the 5th day I think, they could clone me, change my gentics to female, grow me and then put my thoughts into a female me. Voila!

Oh and then shoot the old me in the head!

I agree. I mean, I fear what our military would do with such technology, but we honestly can't avoid the coming of changes that will occur. The difference is that the citizens of our country need to be open to the same things as any potential bad people do... Like people with a bad agenda high in power. So basically, you must be part of that techno-revolution I fear. Be two steps ahead of the people who would ban it/use it for their own bad gains.

I'd love to clone myself and get a new body. I've dreamt of it for years. I'd also love nanotechnology, but there would have to be some serious rules involved in nano. Hackers/Murderers will be a new issue. It gets harder and harder to mess around with computers these days I feel, but what about when they are the size of cells or smaller? They'd have to be simplistic machines at first I'd think. You don't want someone with a remote control to their programming messing with your brain.

I do think that the benefits may outweigh the risks though... I love technology too much to fear it to the point of restricting a whole field of it. I just think people need to be careful...
