Lori, I agree with you, but I worry most about running up credit card debt.  That's the "financial crack" addiction. For a $10,000 debt with a 21.47% APR, paying the minimum of $200 per month would take over 10 years.  I've known people who have run up over $75,000 in credit card debt.

I agree with you. I have been bankrupt twice. I know how hard it is to dig yourself out of that hole. I'll never do that again. Hopefully, you can reach them before they start digging!

Exactly Lori!  It is so seductive.  I hope I get through to even one kid.

I have many financial clients that use "reward" credit cards in their business
as well as for their personal use.

The safe and prudent way to use credit cards is to always pay it off in Full
when the credit card bill arrives, that way they can avoid the extremely high interest
rates but also they never let credit card debt accumulate beyond one month...  they only
charge on their credit card as a convenience, pay it off fully every month,  and enjoy
any "rewards" that are earned.

The result of those kinds of long term responsible financial habits is that their
resultant FICA credit scores are well above 800.

I totally agree, Danielle!

Teenagers don't understand fiscal restraint.  I try and convince them to wait until they get a job. Sadly, the credit cards are so seductive and most of these kids come from poor families.

Many go into debt in college for books...and beers, clothes, etc., expecting to pay off with the job after graduation. By then, they are being choked by the debt compounding with monthly charges.

It is a nasty cycle.

Credit cards for me are a funny thing. I use them for large purchases as I just get the 0% interest ones. There is usually a 2.5% fee to money transfer but the 0% term is normally about 2 years. So it's equivalent to 1.25% apr. Much cheaper than any loan I can get.

If bigger amounts, then can just balance transfer to another 0% card at end of 2 years again for a low % over 2 years. I pay the minimum each month but then save a larger payback amount into funds. These return 5-10% and I pay a lump sum off the card by selling these funds before the 0% period ends. So really I can end up with a small gain or at least neutral.

Charlotte, I love when people play the credit card system against itself!  They abuse enough people.

I am starting to get into the holiday spirit.  They are decorating the tree at Rockefeller Plaza, and the city is getting dressed for Christmas.

🔗 [Link: imgbb.com]

Yesterday, I had the Manhattan version of Stonehenge on the way to work. The sunrise was blinding.

🔗 [Link: imgbb.com]

In Brooklyn, there is this insane frenzy to be the most decorated house in the city. It is so intense that there are tour buses that come from Manhattan just to see the lights(https://www.dykerheightschristmaslights.com/ 🔗).

It doesn't say "Merry Christmas," it screams it...way too over the top.

I changed my avatar to fit the holidays, too.

Love the avatar pic! So festive. 😀

I'm not much into holiday decorations, but as a kid, we would drive through the "nicer" neighborhoods to see the lights. I suspect that our AI overlords will start restricting such extravagance, as that electrical power is needed to run their crypto-mining data centers.

There are a few OTT decorations locally, a lot of them ask for donations to charities. Not bothering to put any up for myself again this year, well its only me apart from mum coming over again for lunch on Christmas day. On our coach trip we will be going to York where they have a Christmas fair so might get some presents for the kids then.

I love York.

I did an excavation there a few years back. I had been doing excavations on Hadrian's Wall, but the head archaeologist, Toby, at York, pointed out that there were more pubs in York.

There is only one pub in Twice Brewed on Hadrian's Wall, named after the Inn there. It's a great pub and I have stayed there many times.  It got its name because they "twice brewed" the ale, which meant the inn offered stronger ale.  They reopened the brewery a couple of years ago.

York, on the other hand, has 365 to 450 pubs.  Toby won.

I never had a chance to count the pubs...my liver thanked me.

Wow, Emma is really studying that dig closely, no?

No. She passed out in the dirt from last night's Pub Crawl.

The worst is getting the dirt out of my nose, Lori.

Always gauge an excavation by the location of the nearest pub!  The stuff in the ground can always wait another day.  It's not going anywhere, and there is always a thirst by 5 o'clock.

Emma1017

I had a very strange dream last night.  I dreamt that I was sitting, and my mother put a large, gift-wrapped box on my lap.  She was excited for me to open it.

Under the white tissue, inside the box, I recognized my mother's favorite dress, the one she wore at my wedding.  She told me to stand up and hold up the dress.  As I did so, she told me to hold it against me.  She said that she had the dress altered to fit me. Even stranger, even my mother-in-law was there too, and they both wanted me to try it on.  They were both very happy and excited to try it on.

As I held it up against me, sadly, my alarm clock woke me.

Both my mom and mother-in-law are dead.

What stuck out about the dream was that I was presenting male as her son when she gave me the dress.  Also, my mom was 5'4".  I'm 6 feet.  In the dream, I realized that it took a lot of work to get it to fit me.

The dream was totally out of the blue. Absolutely not like anything I have ever dreamed of before.

Hmmmmm...........
