Laker Jackson, an eighth grader at Eastmark High School in Mesa, AZ, is a cisgender boy, but his school has classified him as a "biological female" since last year, when he and his family discovered that his original birth certificate registered him as female rather than male. Laker's mother Becky Jackson told ABC affiliate KNXV-TV that she filed for a corrected birth certificate this summer, which the family received this month, but to no avail: Queen Creek School District administrators stated in a letter to the Jacksons that Laker "may only participate in classes or athletics that align to the original birth certificate."
Last week, Laker tried out for the Eastmark boys' basketball team, but was "physically remove[d]" from tryouts by the school's athletic director, Becky Jackson told AZ Family. She said that the district also removed Laker from an all-boys gym class and have mandated that he use a separate restroom. Last year, Laker reportedly won a conference championship for the wrestling team at the school.
"I'm really heartbroken. I'm sad for everybody that it's come down to this," Becky told KNXV, adding that she has advocated for trans youth and has a close family member who is trans. "I feel like it's setting a precedent for both people who are pro trans and people who maybe have an issue with it, because in the end, the precedent they're setting is [that] it doesn't matter what paperwork or information you show us or give us, we are going to force a biological boy to play with the girls."
