North Carolina Primary Voters Sent 4 Anti-Trans Dem Candidates Packing

Democratic voters in North Carolina delivered a resounding progressive mandate in Tuesday night's primaries, sending at least four anti-transgender candidates packing amid backlash against the Trump administration.

While results in several races are not yet official, anti-trans Democrats fell on their faces in multiple races for seats in the North Carolina House of Representatives. Republicans are currently one vote shy of supermajority in the state House, but some Democrats have crossed party lines to vote with the GOP on LGBTQ+ rights and immigration issues, sparking outrage among their constituents.

The night's most high-profile loss came for Rep. Carla Cunningham, who has represented North Carolina's 106th district since 2012. Cunningham drew voters' ire last year when she proclaimed that "all cultures are not equal" and immigrants "must assimilate" while speaking in support of a pro-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) bill. She also voted for a law that protects parents from neglect charges if they do not affirm their child's gender identity, saying at the time that the "parent is the lead and the guider [...] and I don't know why we're getting it so confused." Cunningham was demolished Tuesday night by pro-LGBTQ+ Reverend Rodney Sadler, securing just 21.8% of the vote.
