He countered the forced redistricting going on in Texas by allowing the people of California to vote on whether or not they wanted redistricting, that's honourable to me. Authoritarians don't put decisions up for votes.
I don't think big change is the answer, just a return to normalcy. I don't even like saying this, but what the democrats need is a straight, white, guy if they want to win. The party is banging its head against the wall trying to get a woman in. It's admirable. But please just go for an easy win this time. I don't want to see defeat snatched from the jaws of victory over "wanting to try something different."

There are quite a few people standing up to the president, but he's one of the most visible due to his presidential aspirations and, especially, the media coverage. No, he himself is not an authoritarian; that doesn't make him the best counter to authoritarianism.
Big changes have already occurred - from 2017 to 2021 and again in the past year. Whatever your definition of normalcy, it's gone and can't be restored without big changes. Institutions have been destroyed and highly skilled people have left the country. Electing a status quo Democrat won't just flip a switch to put everything back the way it was. So if we have to make big changes to fix things anyway, why would we choose to rebuild a system that enabled and even promoted what's happening today? Why wouldn't we want to build something better and more resilient?
But Newsom's first problem is that Black voters won't rally around him the way they did Biden. Democrats absolutely cannot win the presidency without massive Black voter support. Democrats need to do much, much better. We rarely know who the likely candidate will be this far ahead of an election. I sincerely hope that's the case now, too.
