A conservative Los Angeles County engineer sued his employer Tuesday for refusing to let him work from home in June, when the LGBT Pride flag will be flown from the building where he works.

Eric Batman, an employee of the county's Department of Public Works for 24 years, "cannot participate in a celebration that his religion deems sinful," his lawyers wrote in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court.

They said he was away from work when the county first ordered the flag displayed at all its offices in June 2023, but for the last two years was told by his employers to take the back entrance to the building that month, in order to avoid seeing the flag hanging from the front. He was also advised to seek mental health counseling, the suit said.

The lawsuit referred to June as the "so-called Pride Month" and to its striped emblem as the "so-called Progress Pride Flag."

But Batman's attorneys, Daniel Schmid of the evangelical legal group Liberty Counsel and Nicolai Cocis, a private lawyer in Riverside County, said that working in the building while the flag is displayed violates their client's "sincerely held religious beliefs, derived from the teachings in the Holy Bible, that homosexuality is a sin and that he should not celebrate it."

People like this claim things offend their religious beliefs, yet continue each year to celebrate pagan traditions instead of adhering to their faith. They celebrate Halloween, have a decorated tree at Christmas, and celebrate Easter with candy and eggs.

It isn't about one person being "offended," it is about using the opportunity to make a statement that their beliefs are superior to all others.
