A Seattle man, who said that he hoped President Donald Trump would kill all trans people, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a violent attack on a transgender woman in the city's University District. Prosecutors said the case illustrates how harassment can quickly escalate into bias-motivated violence.

On Friday, Andre Karlow was sentenced in King County Superior Court after a jury convicted him of second-degree assault and committing a hate crime for attacking Andie Holcepl last March. Prosecutors argued the assault was fueled by hostility toward Holcepl's gender identity.

Prosecutors said Karlow shouted insults and called Holcepl a "drag queen." When she tried to record the harassment on her phone, Karlow punched her in the mouth, setting off a group assault. Witnesses said Holcepl was punched and kicked while assailants shouted anti-transgender slurs. She suffered broken teeth, facial injuries, and a brain bleed before escaping into a nearby restaurant for help.

The University District assault was not the only case tied to Karlow. In 2024, he punched a transgender Sound Transit fare ambassador who asked him to verify his fare at a light-rail station.

The judge sentenced Karlow to an 84-month prison term for the attack. Karlow also received a shorter sentence in the earlier assault case.

This hits kind of close to home, so I won't say what I'm thinking. Other than I am sad that his life must be so twisted that he feels he has to be like that. And I hope that, during his time there, he can get some help to change. I suspect not, though.

it's possible. I am a firm believer that if someone takes their punishment (assuming it was just and fair) then they need to be helped back into normal society otherwise, they will just end up re-offending. It doesn't mean i don't think jail should be hard, it should be, it is a punishment after all. I hear US jails are pretty hardcore. It might change his way of thinking if he doesn't want to go back there. Not sure what sort of rehabilitation programme they have in the states.

This was his second offense. He got off easy last time, and the judge still went easy on him this time. I suspect he will continue to offend until he gets enough therapy or longer sentences.

Well that sounds like it could be a failure of rehabilitation. Of course some people are beyond saving, if they are given a fair crack at rejoing society but re-offend anyway then, yes sentences should be far longer.
